Control Room Operator

Role Overview Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Control Room Operator is responsible for the safe, environmentally sound and efficient daily operation of three Mass Burn Energy‑from‑Waste boiler‑turbine‑generator systems and associated auxiliaries. The operator directs daily operational activities of shift personnel, including turbine operators, auxiliary operators, heavy equipment operators, back plant operators and truck drivers. Responsibilities Place into service or remove from service boiler‑turbine‑generator systems and auxiliary equipment such as valves, regulators, super‑heaters, feed water heaters, cooling towers, soot‑blowers, fans, conveyors, augers, fuel feeders, pumps, compressors, lime shakers, atomizers, precipitators, etc. Start, stop, parallel, separate, load, and unload the turbine‑generator unit and adjust generator voltage to maintain power factor and control in‑house vars. Observe proper operating procedures based on time and temperature when bringing equipment into service. Control operating parameters from the distributed control system manually or automatically, as required. Monitor plant parameters, make adjustments, and direct operators to keep systems within specified limits. Record all equipment changes and any abnormal or unusual conditions for assigned equipment. Perform daily inspections of the distributed control system, continuous emissions monitoring system, governor controls, automatic voltage regulator controls, fire system annunciation panel, soot‑blowing panel, and turbine supervisory instrumentation; complete log sheets and write maintenance work requests as needed. Assist the Shift Supervisor with preparation of equipment lockouts and tag‑outs. Qualifications / Experience Minimum 5 years of experience in a power plant or related industry as Control Room Operator, Assistant CRO, or equivalent. Preferred ASME/QRO certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire. At least one year’s experience as a Turbine Operator or related outside experience. High school diploma or equivalent required. Thorough knowledge of steam boiler operation, combustion chemistry, boiler water quality control, turbine‑generators, continuous emissions monitoring equipment, and auxiliary systems. Clear understanding of equipment interlocks, alarms, trips, and plant control loops, including response speeds under normal and abnormal conditions. Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English. Physical Demands Walk, stand, sit, climb, and handle temperature changes including extreme heat. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Qualified to wear a full‑face respirator. Shift Work 5 shifts on, 2 shifts off, 2 shifts on, 5 shifts off, rotating 12‑hour days/nights. What We Offer Health Care benefits starting on day one.
