Payroll Specialist

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Onsite Interview: Preferably In-Person Client: STATE CLIENT Job Description: We are seeking a Payroll Specialist to support the Finance Department’s Payroll Division on a long-term temporary assignment. The position is 40 hours per week and requires the ability to work independently while handling administrative, data entry, payroll, and customer service responsibilities. Responsibilities: Prepare checks and remittance advice for payroll deduction submissions. Maintain employee master files, including direct deposit, Federal and State withholding allowances, deductions, income codes, and general ledger accounts. Generate and analyze reports from the electronic timekeeping system. Communicate deadlines to payroll clerks for timely submission of employee information and hours. Verify payroll transactions for active employees, new hires, and terminated employees, including retroactive pay, promotions, bonuses, adjustments, and fringe benefits. Compute final pay for terminated and retired employees, including unused leave and deduction reimbursements. Work closely with Human Resources, Payroll Clerks, Risk Management, and Benefits teams on payroll processes and systems. Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end reports. Assist with the issuance of W-2 forms. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Knowledge of payroll practices and income tax reporting preferred. Experience with payroll and income tax-related processes. Strong customer service and communication skills. Ability to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Must complete a background investigation.
