Shipyard Designer (Mechanical, Pipe, Electrical & Sheet Metal)

Location: Newport News VA
Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Day Shift (Mon - Fri)
Pay: $27 - $48

Position Summary

We are seeking experienced Shipyard Designers specializing in Mechanical, Pipe, Electrical, and Sheet Metal systems to support marine and shipbuilding projects. Candidates must have strong 3D modeling and production design experience in a shipyard or marine environment. The ideal candidate will be proficient in CAD/CAM software and capable of producing detailed manufacturing and installation drawings for vessel construction and repair projects.

Experience with CATIA and Siemens NX is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop 2D and 3D production drawings and models for marine vessel systems and structures
• Design and detail mechanical, piping, electrical, and sheet metal components for shipbuilding and repair projects
• Create fabrication, assembly, and installation drawings in accordance with project specifications and shipyard standards
• Utilize CAD/CAM software to support production, manufacturing, and engineering requirements
• Coordinate designs with engineering, production teams, planners, and project management
• Review technical specifications, ship drawings, and customer requirements to ensure compliance
• Support design modifications, revisions, and as-built documentation
• Conduct interference checks and ensure proper system integration within vessel spaces
• Maintain drawing accuracy, revision control, and document management standards
• Assist production teams with technical support and troubleshooting during fabrication and installation

Qualifications

• Associates Degree or 3 years of equivalent experience in Designing
• 3+ years of shipyard or marine design experience preferred
• Strong 3D modeling and production design experience required
• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software required
• Experience with CATIA and Siemens NX highly preferred
• Ability to read and interpret ship drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
• Knowledge of shipbuilding processes, marine systems, and production workflows
• Experience designing mechanical, piping, electrical, or sheet metal systems in a marine environment
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Effective communication and problem-solving skills

Preferred Skills

• AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, AVEVA Marine, or similar marine design software experience
• Familiarity with NAVSEA, ABS, USCG, or military/commercial shipbuilding standards
• Experience supporting new construction and ship repair projects
• Knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes
