Position Goal: To develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties may be assigned. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:
- Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to students. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
- Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
- Evaluates each student's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.
- Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for school and community.
- Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
- Supervises students in out-of-c1assroom activities as assigned.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintains professional competence through in service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
- Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Pennsylvania Instructional Teaching Certificate LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively with other employees, students and parents.
- Ability to apply basic arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions for practical situations.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form.
- Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff.
- Ability to develop and maintain required records and reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents and the community.
- Good knowledge of procedures, practices, materials, and equipment required to provide appropriate learning experiences for students to whom assigned.
- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Must be courteous and able to deal effectively with people.
- Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented.
- Ability to maintain personal self-control in stressful situations.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and software.
- Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day if assigned to an itinerant position.
