Part-time Department Assistant Currently there is a part-time vacancy in the Library Services Department . The selected candidate will be highly organized, adaptable, and capable of learning and performing a variety of tasks. This position is responsible for generalist duties within the Literacy Office. Responsibilities include answering the phone, responding to emails, as well as inquiries made in person, providing information and referrals, taking down contact information, and assisting the Literacy Coordinator with trainings and events. The candidate will also maintain the Project Adult Literacy calendar, send out the Literacy newsletter, ensure the office is well stocked, and notify the Coordinator when low on supplies. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future part‑time Department Assistant vacancies as they occur throughout the City. Schedule Library Services Department: This position may work up to 19 hours per week during weekdays, with occasional weekend rotation as needed. Career Path This is the fully qualified journey‑level classification in the Administrative Support series. The series includes Office Assistant, Department Assistant and Administrative Assistant. Qualifications Experience: Three or more years of increasingly responsible secretarial and clerical experience. Education: Equivalent to completion of high school, supplemented by coursework or training in word processing and spreadsheet software programs, and work planning and management. License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record may be required. May be required to obtain CPR, First Aid, and/or AED certifications within six months of hire. Background and Security Clearance The prospective candidate must successfully complete a thorough background review, including being fingerprinted by the Newport Beach Police Department. The resulting report of your conviction history, (if any), will be evaluated along with the other information received in connection with your application. Except as otherwise required by law, a criminal conviction will not necessarily disqualify you from the position.
