HVAC Lead Technician

Job Duties and Responsibilities Lead and coordinate daily HVAC maintenance and repair activities. Troubleshoot and repair HVAC, refrigeration, chilled water, and air handling systems. Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on HVAC equipment. Read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, schematics, and technical manuals. Supervise and mentor HVAC technicians and subcontractors. Plan and assign work orders, ensuring completion in accordance with established schedules. Ensure work is performed in accordance with site safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and environmental regulations. Diagnose electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical control system issues. Maintain computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) records and work orders. Coordinate equipment outages, testing, and commissioning activities. Support energy efficiency and system reliability initiatives. Conduct inspections and recommend equipment upgrades or replacements. Participate in planning and scheduling maintenance activities. Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, OSHA requirements, and DOE regulations. Education and Experience Must be a US Citizen. EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification. High School Diploma or GED required. Technical school certification or Associate Degree in HVAC/R, Mechanical Technology, or related field preferred. Minimum 5–10 years of HVAC maintenance experience in industrial, commercial, government, nuclear, or manufacturing facilities. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience. Strong knowledge of HVAC/R systems, controls, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and air handling units. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications. Proficiency using CMMS software and Microsoft Office applications. Valid driver's license. Preferred Qualifications Journeyman or Master HVAC License. Experience in DOE, nuclear, industrial, or federal facilities. Knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), DDC controls, and energy management systems. Experience with safety programs including Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, and Hazard Analysis. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Leadership and team coordination abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a fast‑paced environment. Commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and work in confined spaces. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Desired Certifications OSHA 30-Hour. HVAC Journeyman/Master License. CPR/First Aid. Applicable manufacturer training certifications. Area Security Access Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments. Work Hours A 40‑hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hour/day; five days per week), 4/10’s (10 hour/day; four days per week), and 9/80’s (9 hours/day, five days on week AA and four days on week BB). Work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each workday has 30 minutes lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager. Work Environment / Physical Demands The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
