Full-Time Second Shift Custodian

Salisbury Township School District has a vacancy for a full-time 2nd shift custodian. This position will assist the Director of Facilities to provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, develop, teach and work. Successful candidates must demonstrate a strong sense of attention to detail and must be able to work independently. Minimum of high school diploma desired; thorough knowledge, understanding and use of custodial procedures, equipment, and cleaning materials and basic knowledge of sanitation. Maturity and ability to deal with other custodians, students, staff, parents, vendors and the general public; physical and emotional stamina sufficient to work effectively as a member of a crew performing custodial work requiring team effort; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of close supervision.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Keep buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Shovel and plow walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate.
• Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Perform custodial duties such as sweeping, dusting, mopping and vacuuming floors, stairs and corridors.
• Wax and buff floors as required.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of toilets and drinking fountains.
• Replenish soap dispensers, toilet paper holders and towel holders.
• Clean chalkboards and erasers as needed.
• Empty garbage and recyclable materials daily.
• Clean routine equipment such as pencil sharpeners, soap dispensers, map racks, floor machines and vacuums.
• Assist in the preparation of school events by setting up or removing tables, chairs, furniture, flags, signs, decorations, etc. as required.
• Assist cafeteria staff by removing garbage, cleaning, mopping and clearing loading platforms.
• Maintain upkeep of grounds by cutting grass, weeding, tree trimming and by keeping grounds free from paper and debris.
• Perform miscellaneous work such as washing windows and changing light bulbs.
• Request necessary custodial supplies and equipment, and evaluate their effectiveness with the Director of Facilities or Assistant to the Director of Facilities.
• Ascertain security of building by checking doors, roof hatches and windows.
• Report any apparent malfunction of equipment or damage to buildings such as broken windows, faulty electrical switches or other safety hazards.
• Ensure that all fire exits are clear.
• Assist utility maintenance personnel in the cleaning of building operational systems and perform minor repairs.
• Report major building repairs to the appropriate supervisor.
• Paint as required.
• Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated.
• Must be able to operate light grounds equipment to support grounds care and removal of snow.
• Must be willing to be cross-trained on all aspects of school buildings and mechanical equipment.
• Must be able to arrive at work or assigned special duties on time daily.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities, Assistant to the Director of Facilities, or Building Principals.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of high school diploma desired.
• Thorough knowledge, understanding and use of custodial procedures, equipment, and cleaning materials and basic knowledge of sanitation.
• Maturity and ability to deal with other custodians, students, staff, parents, vendors and the general public.
• Physical and emotional stamina sufficient to work effectively as a member of a crew performing custodial work requiring team effort.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of close supervision.

Physical demands include:

• Ability to climb a ladder and to work at a high elevation.
• Ability to lift, carry, push and pull a weight of 50 pounds, transport it 100 yards, and lift it to shoulder height.
• Ability to reach over the head to retrieve/store objects, and/or crawl into confined spaces.
• Ability to stoop and bend as required to operate various equipment.
• Must be able to manage courteous communications with others, including those who are upset or angry, both via the telephone, in writing and in person.

Sensory abilities include:

• Regularly required to sit, write, read, type, talk, communicate, comprehend and hear.
• Frequently required to use hands, fingers, arms and legs to handle or feel and reach, including repetitive motions with all limbs.

Work environment includes:

• Moderate noise level.
• Available during normal business hours, may attend meetings/events in the evening or weekend.
• Must be able to work outside in various forms of inclement weather.

Temperament includes:

• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
• Able to make judgments and work under high levels of stress.

Cognitive ability includes:

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, technical manuals, and procedure manuals.
