Job Title: General Surgery & Breast Center-Medical Assistant

To provide nursing guidance and support within the department, adhere to all policies and procedures of MMC, and meet the needs of patients in a teamwork approach.

Working conditions include an office setting with frequent telephone contact and face-to-face communication with patients. Interactions with others are constant and interruptive. There is possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to medical practice. Varied activities including walking, bending, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), stooping, assisting patients and sitting for extended periods of time may occur. Also, occasional stress from multiple responsibilities.

Job responsibilities include representing MMC in a courteous and professional manner, greeting guests and incoming calls, setting up exam rooms, assisting doctors/providers in office exams and procedures, assisting patients, performing proper intake, medical charting and ordering through EMR systems, packing and sterilizing instruments for procedures, providing patients with proper education concerning medication and treatment, cleaning and stocking exam rooms after use, completing all HealthStream assignments on time, planning, prioritizing and organizing workload to maintain efficient patient/client operation in the department, communicating lab results, questions, medications, symptoms etc., notifying patients of test results as directed by doctor/provider, authorizing medications and procedures if needed, charting all communications with patients, calling prescriptions to pharmacy as directed by doctor/provider, ordering lab work, completing prior authorizations for medications, MRI's, etc., scheduling follow-up appointments, checking patients out, answering phone calls, providing prompt, efficient, and accurate patient service, meeting or exceeding patient, doctor, and staff expectations through a cooperative, teamwork approach, flexible when asked to stay past your scheduled work time (as needed) to accommodate the needs of patients and staff, knowledgeable of and adhere to all HIPAA and OSHA guidelines, be knowledgeable of and adhere to all MMC policies and procedures, and with instruction, perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required skills include excellent customer service skills, strong skills in communicating effectively with co-workers, providers, and patients, ability to conduct daily functions in an appropriate, professional, and compassionate manner, ability to manage/prioritize multiple tasks in an efficient and timely manner; attention to detail and well organized, teamwork attitude, flexibility to respond to changing demands, ability to react calmly and competently in stressful situations, and effectively utilize computer systems and programs that are necessary to complete daily tasks.

Education/experience requirements include completion of a Medical Assistant Program or Certified Nursing Assistant Program with 2 + years of experience.
