Machinist / Toolmaker

Primary Purpose of Position Performs tasks and provides services to support the plant’s production goals, overall business plans and objectives as directed. The Saratoga Springs plant is a high‑volume, fast‑paced 24/7‑365 days/year manufacturing environment. Crews work 12 hour shifts (6am‑6pm/6pm‑6am) with a 4‑on/4‑off schedule and additional 8 weeks of day shift and 4 weeks of night shift. Essential Functions Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives. Supports and follows the guidelines of the food safety system. Receives verbal instructions, blueprints and work orders; makes drawings or sketches of parts to be made or repaired. Interprets drawings, calculates and determines indices, tapers and other dimensions to be used for part(s). Performs layout work as required. Receives tools and paperwork; establishes and maintains logbooks. Selects and grinds tools, adjusting tools, speeds and feed rates for efficient machining; machines parts to precision requirements. Sets up and operates machine tools, lathes, grinders, mills, and hones. Performs dismantling, fitting or assembly work required for maintenance or production equipment. Repairs and maintains all assigned machines and equipment. Accesses, inputs, and retrieves information from the computer. Performs clean‑up, painting, and housekeeping duties. Communicates pertinent information to next shift. Assists in inspection of tooling and operates most inspection equipment. May be required to go to customer(s) to troubleshoot equipment. Initiates, reviews and follows all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for area of responsibility. Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, division, group, and company, handling stress and conflicts positively. Required to work assigned schedule or 12‑hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday; overtime and on‑call as directed. Regular and predictable attendance is required between assigned start and end times. Performs duties without posing a direct threat to anyone or property; ensures safety rules and regulations are enforced. Works independently within parameters set by management. Communicates effectively; writes, reads, comprehends and follows complicated verbal and written instructions. Meets knowledge, skills, abilities, physical requirements and working conditions set forth in this description and on the Physical Demands Assessment. Communicates with emergency coordinators regarding environmental management activities. Understands and responds effectively to emergency procedures and implements contingency plans as required. Completes and maintains environmental documentation as trained; reports status of responsibilities. Recognizes waste streams and minimizes waste generation, properly disposing and segregating wastes. Complies with environmental regulations when handling hazardous and non‑hazardous materials and wastes. Position Requirements High School Diploma or Education Equivalency required. Job‑related experience of at least 2–3 years. Working knowledge of standard machine shop and tool‑and‑die practices, metallurgy, heat treatment, welding, brazing, and nomenclature of assigned equipment. Ability to apply independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation of standard machining techniques, procedures, and criteria. Capable of handling sensitive, related and proprietary information confidentially. Follows company policies, procedures, practices, and standards of conduct as outlined in Ball Corporation manuals. Maintains awareness of hazardous waste management and environmental requirements through scheduled training. Thorough understanding of operating principles of all assigned equipment. Demonstrates skill in operating grinders, lathes, drill presses, and other machine shop equipment to tolerances up to ±0.000050. Reads blueprints. Demonstrates skills related to tool and die work. Uses basic math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Describes the sequence of operations to complete the job. Maintains professional competence, ethical integrity, knowledge and skills. Works in a manufacturing environment that requires protective shields, masks or clothing due to torch flames, arc welding or similar systems. Climbs and works in high or narrow places to place rigging, hoists, chain falls, scaffolds, jacks, skids and rollers. Exposed to occupational hazards including high noise, obstacles, chemical exposure, etc. Wears appropriate safety glasses, hearing protection, clothing, footwear and follows safety practices. Works in confined areas. Preferred Requirements Ability to create and modify technical drawings using CAD platforms. Understanding of material properties, strength, hardness and machinability. Knowledge of different metals (e.g., aluminum, steel, stainless, alloys) and their machining behavior. Selection of appropriate materials, tooling, and speeds/feeds based on material characteristics. Experience in a safety‑driven machine shop environment with knowledge of material properties and machining impacts. Expected hiring hourly rate: $44.54/hr (salary determined by applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities). Eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan. On‑site work environment in Saratoga Springs, NY; requires regular in‑person engagement and occasional travel and local commute between Ball locations.
