FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC RECRUIT

Job Summary We are currently recruiting for three (3) Firefighter Paramedic Recruit positions. The Recruit class is an entry‑level class in the Firefighter series for those completing initial fire department training. Upon successful completion of the orientation phase the Recruit will transition to the Firefighter/Paramedic class. Fire Station Visits are encouraged prior to the skills test day. Candidate Types Internal Promotional Candidates: Current full‑time City of San Marcos employees who have passed initial probation or have completed at least one year of service and meet the minimum requirements. Lateral Candidates: Candidates with two or more years of paid, full‑time experience at a comparable or higher level, currently employed in this capacity, who meet the minimum requirements. Open Competitive Candidates: Candidates who meet the minimum requirements but are not internal or lateral candidates. Preferred Candidate Attributes The ideal candidate is a self‑starter, highly motivated, capable of embracing innovative management principles, and enjoys the challenge of blending traditional fire service values with modern business practices. The candidate must be able to work with minimal direction, maintain high operational standards, and develop cooperative relationships with city departments and community organizations. Required Certifications and Licenses High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Accredited California State Fire Marshal / State Fire Training Firefighter I Academy Certificate (or proof of enrollment in an accredited program). Valid CPR Certification (BLS-C Current). ACLS Card. Driver License (must obtain a CA driver license if from another state). Driver/Operator Certificate. Certified EMT/Paramedic license (or proof of enrollment). Must meet County of San Diego EMS Office requirements. San Diego County Card (required at appointment). Valid county accreditation card if different. FCTC written score and CPAT passing result within 12 months of application deadline. Additional Desired Certifications California State Firefighter I & II Certificates. Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational Certificate.

NIMS (IS700).

Any supplemental material (cover letter, resume, etc.). Representative Duties Respond to alarms involving fire, accidents, gas leaks, flooding, hazardous substances, and life‑saving and rescue work. Place fire hose, set ladders, operate fire streams, ventilate, and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and perform rescue services. Treat and transport patients according to San Diego County Emergency Medical Services protocol and department policy; diagnose medical problems and provide emergency medical care. Interpret electrocardiograms, recognize arrhythmias, administer CPR, defibrillation, IV solutions, emergency bandaging, splinting, and use adjunctive breathing devices. Prepare and maintain confidential records, reports such as medical information, controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, and EMS reports. Participate in and support the quality assurance/quality improvement program. Operate department vehicles, emergency medical equipment, radio equipment, PPE, fire hydrants, rescue tools, generators, pumps, and occasionally fire and rescue apparatus. Perform salvage and overhaul operations to remove hazards and prevent water damage. Perform fire prevention and pre‑fire planning inspections in commercial, industrial, and municipal facilities; inspect and maintain fire hydrants. Participate in drills and training activities; participate in fire watches; engage in a self‑directed exercise program to maintain physical fitness. Study City geography, department rules, regulations, and procedures; update station bulletin boards and maps. Clean and maintain fire station, perform preventive maintenance on fire apparatus and equipment. May be called in from off duty for major fires or emergencies, including extended periods and additional hours for mutual aid or sponsored events. Present programs and participate in departmental public relations programs. Perform other related work as required. Qualifications Knowledge of: Firefighting and EMS procedures and equipment; fireground tactics and strategy; incident command system; incident safety; mutual aid agreements; hazardous materials procedures; confined space and technical rescue techniques; fire prevention and investigation methods; California vehicular laws; public‑service laws and regulations; fire codes; department policies, rules, and regulations; city geography; personal protective equipment; federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations; algebraic and arithmetic computations; English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation; customer service principles. Ability to: Perform competently under extreme pressure; make accurate observations and rapid judgments; understand procedural instructions; give oral instructions; prepare clear reports; deal effectively with the public; work cooperatively in teams; maintain physical endurance and agility; demonstrate cultural diversity awareness and appreciation; bring value to the city and department. Education and Experience: Must be at least 18 years old and have at least a high‑school diploma or equivalent. Must have graduated from a 240‑hour Firefighter I Academy accredited by California State Fire Marshal/State Fire Training or equivalent. Must have completed appropriate education and training to obtain licensure as a California State Certified EMT/Paramedic and meet the requirements of the County of San Diego EMS Office, including the successful completion of the San Diego County protocol examination. #J-18808-Ljbffr City of San Marcos, CA
