Harnessing Design Engineer, Satellites (Starlink) Redmond, WA SpaceX is developing technologies to enable human life on Mars and is deploying Starlink, the world’s largest satellite constellation that provides fast, reliable internet to millions worldwide. We design, build, test, and operate all system components—from satellites to consumer receivers—and seek engineers who can maximize Starlink’s utility for global communities and businesses. As an Avionics Design Engineer on the Starlink team, you will own harness design from concept and component selection through production, qualification, and system integration. This multidisciplinary role gives you exposure to the entire high‑level product and vehicle you work on. Responsibilities Develop the electro‑mechanical design of wire harnesses within our family of Starlink vehicles. Create harness design solutions in a 3D NX CAD environment and manage technical trade studies to meet stakeholder objectives while adhering to internal design standards and requirements. Generate electrical schematics to support both flight and qualification designs. Own vehicle‑level harnessing mechanical assemblies and drive to closure of all systems integration trades related to those assemblies. Perform analysis and physical testing (mechanical and electrical) of harnessing for thermal, loads, vibration, and shock to ensure full flight qualification. Document and communicate design, analysis, and testing results through design reviews. Create and release manufacturing documentation and drawings on schedule. Interface with harness production and integration teams to ensure designs can be produced and installed on schedule. Conduct R&D investigations and trade studies to push wire harness design to new boundaries in mass and cost savings. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Experience with CAD and FEA software packages. Preferred Skills and Experience Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter. Experience with wire harness 3D design, installation drawings, formboard creation, wiring diagrams, and complex top‑level assembly modeling. 1+ years of hands‑on project experience with complex mechanical systems, preferably as a team lead. Strong teamwork skills, proven ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines, and excellent attention to detail. Understanding of structural analysis and failure modes of complex mechanical systems. Prior ownership of a complex component or assembly from initial design through high‑volume production ramp. Self‑motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills. Additional Requirements Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones. Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time. Compensation and Benefits Pay ranges vary by level: Avionics Design Engineer/LevelI: $100,000–$115,000 per year. Avionics Design Engineer/LevelII: $110,000–$135,000 per year. Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case‑by‑case basis based on knowledge, skills, education, and experience. In addition to base salary, you may be eligible for long‑term incentives (company stock, stock options, or long‑term cash awards), discretionary bonuses, and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
