CORRECTIONS OFFICER I

Kalamazoo County

Union Affiliation: Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Deputies Association (KCSDA), an affiliate of the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) GENERAL SUMMARY This position is responsible for maintaining the custody, safety, and security of residents of the Kalamazoo County Jail, a 24-hour, physically secure criminal justice facility. The role requires successful completion of a medical examination, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and a comprehensive background investigation. Candidates must be able to understand, retain, and apply agency rules, regulations, policies, and security procedures. The position requires the ability to maintain composure in stressful or emergency situations; multitask effectively; react quickly and calmly; communicate clearly; prepare accurate written reports; and learn and apply self-defense and control techniques when dealing with potentially hostile or combative people. Work assignments are variable and may include any shift, day of the week, including nights, weekends, and holidays. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Observe residents while detecting or prohibiting behavior that might threaten the facility's security or others' safety. Respond quickly to calls for assistance within the jail. Prepare written reports after responding to critical incidents. Accurately count and observe jail population. Conduct thorough searches of those individuals who are arrested, housed, or otherwise temporarily accommodated within the jail. Monitor feeding, recreational activities and correctly deliver medication(s) to residents. Ensure proper operation and upkeep of the facility's security systems, firefighting equipment, and other jail gear. Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be 18 years of age or older. High School diploma or equivalency. Possess a valid Michigan Driver's license. Pass a Physical Ability Test: Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test (LCOPAT) via Michigan Sheriffs Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC). For requirements, dates, locations, and fees, visit misctc.org. Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An individual with any of the following is ineligible for consideration for employment: A felony conviction, pending felony or misdemeanor charge, domestic violence conviction, or any outstanding warrant.
