Behavior Support Assistant

Rowland Unified School District is offering multiple positions for Behavior Support Assistants. Typical hours for this position are five and a half (5.5) hours per day, five (5) days per week, nine and a half (9.5) months a year. Eligibility lists are being established in all classifications to fill current and future vacancies and hire substitutes for the next six months. Position details below:

You will be tested for your ability to speak and read in the second language as part of the testing process. The hourly salary for the job classifications are as follows:

• Behavior Support Assistant - $21.77 - $26.55
• Behavior Support Assistant - Bilingual (Spanish) - $22.33 - $27.20

Under the direction of a designated administrator, assists a certificated teacher in providing support to behaviorally challenged individuals or small groups of students; monitors, redirects, and modifies student progress regarding inappropriate behaviors and performance, makes presentations and develops activities to assist students in improving academic performance, self-esteem, social skills and positive behaviors; provides training and supervision to students involved in school programs such as Cross-Age or Peer Tutoring, SARB etc., and performs other related duties as required.

The Behavior Support Assistant class is distinguished from other instructional support classifications in that incumbents independently provide guidance services to assist students in improving their personal, social and other non-academic skills. They receive technical work direction from the psychologist, principal and members of the Student Study Team. Most of the students served by the guidance program have physical/learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral problems, or come from dysfunctional families with problems such as substance abuse, divorce, and child abuse. Behavior Support Assistants work with the parents as well as the students and school staff when attempting to improve the students' attendance and academic performance through improvement of the students' personal and social skills.

Graduation from high school or its equivalency is required. Course work in child development, psychology, behavior management or child education is desirable. Two years of experience working with "at-risk" or special needs students in an educational setting is required. One year of experience may be waived for candidates who have obtained a bachelor's degree in social work, liberal studies, child development or related field.

• A valid and current CPR Certificate (Child and Adult)

A valid, Class C, California Driver License, a good driving record and use of a private automobile may be required and if so, must be maintained during employment. Positions in the specialized language classes require individuals who can speak and read (bilingual) or speak, read and write (bilingual/biliterate) a second language as specified. A valid First Aid Certificate, comparable to the American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate and a Child and Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate is required for all positions. Successful completion of up to 12 hours of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training and Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) training is required during the probationary period and will be provided at the District's expense.

Employees in this classification need to have the strength to perform average lifting up to 20 pounds and occasionally restrain students in crises situations; good speaking and hearing abilities, ability to bend, stoop and reach; stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time; manual dexterity to handle controls and/or operate computers and educational technology equipment; visual acuity to work on computer terminals, use a telephone, and operate a vehicle. Employees in this classification work both inside and outside, may be exposed to airborne pathogens, blood or other bodily fluids and germs, drive a personal vehicle to conduct work, and have direct contact with students, District personnel, and the public, and in the absence of direct supervision.

New employees will be charged a processing fee (approximately $64) for the cost of fingerprinting. This fee must be paid at the time of processing appointment, with a MONEY ORDER ONLY, payable to RUSD.

Employees with one (1) to three (3) years of service earn vacation at the rate of one (1) day for each month in paid status for a maximum of 12 vacation days per year. Part-time employees earn vacation benefits prorated on the average number of hours worked per day per month in their regular assignments.

For twelve month employees, fifteen (15) paid holidays are earned each year and one (1) floating holiday per calendar year. One (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service which may be accumulated from year to year. Employees who transfer from another California school district, including a county superintendent of schools office, who have accrued sick leave may transfer it to this District.

Employees whose regular work assignment is thirty (30) hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the District's insurance program which consists of medical, dental, vision, life insurance and income protection. The District provides eligible employees major medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.

Beginning the 2022-23 school year, all permanent employees who have an earned Bachelor's or Master's degree beyond the requirements for their position are eligible for a stipend. Stipend amounts will be divided into 10 monthly payments, September - June. The stipend amount will be prorated for any midyear degrees conferred in the month the transcript was submitted to and verified by the Human resources Department.

Employees who work 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
