The Radiologic Technologist (non-reg) performs diagnostic imaging studies under the supervision of the Radiologic Technologist.  S/he applies principles of radiation protection.  The Radiologic Technologist (non-reg) produces radiographs (x-rays) to aid in the diagnosis of medical problems.  S/he prevents patients from being exposed to unnecessary radiation.

Qualifications:

Required Education:

• Graduate from an AMA-approved school or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
• Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety License.

  Desirable Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Radiology or related field.

  Required Experience:

• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the radiology field.

  Desirable Experience:

• A minimum of three (3) years of radiology experience in a health care setting.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  General

1.   Prepare examination room, equipment, contrast media, and materials as needed for patient.

2.   Review previous films (if available) prior to current exam to ensure continued quality.

3.  Follow prescribed techniques in administering x-rays, which includes, but not limited to, adjustment of equipment; determination of voltage; current and desired exposure time; arranged immobilization; support devices to obtain proper positioning of patient; adjustment of lead shield; and select proper size film per exam..

4.   Develop film in accordance with photographic techniques and manufacturer recommendations.

5.  Take mobile x-ray unit to patient’s room, emergency room, and surgery for the purpose of obtaining diagnostic film.

6.   Assist physicians in performing imaging studies.

7.   Prepare contrast media for administration to patients and assist physicians.

8.  Observe patient and machine during procedure and report unusual occurrences and record patient’s condition.

9.    Maintain adequate inventory of all necessary supplies.

10.  Maintain Radiologist QA reading log for annual inspections and regulatory compliance.

11. Maintain current and accurate radiographic technique charts for both manual and photo timed techniques.

12.   Report malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to appropriate person(s).

13.   Perform general office duties, write reports, and any tasks deemed necessary to maintain a controlled and functional department.

14.   Schedule patients for Radiologic procedures.

15.   Retain on-call status and rotating shift as required to meet departmental needs.

16.   Inspect emergency crash carts.

17.   Help maintain quality assurance, quality control, and maintain records as defined in departmental policies.

18.   Participate in continuing educational programs to maintain and upgrade technical skills.

19.   Contribute to the orientation of new staff technologists and students as needed.

20.   Assist Director of Radiology with maintenance of QC/QA records, ACR, FDA, and OSHA compliance.

21.   Assist department in maintaining the Radiographic charts.

22.   Enter and retrieve information from computer, as necessary.

Patients

1.   Regard safety of patient as a priority in performing procedures.

2.   Instruct patient in the exam procedures.

3.       Utilize proper basic and advanced positioning techniques as needed.

4.       Practice Radiation Safety and Protection to minimize radiation exposure to patients.

5.       Treat patients in a professional manner.

6.       Maintain imaging equipment (make sure equipment is in proper working condition).

7.       Keep work area and equipment clean and neat.

8.       Clean and disinfect exam room and other equipment before and after patient usage.

9.       Collaborate with other departments, as necessary to improve patient outcome.
