Senior Project Manager

Status: Full-time (1.0 FTE, Exempt, Permanent) Compensation: $90,000 – $105,000 per year About ATNI The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI), incorporated in 1953, is a member‑led intertribal organization representing nearly 60 Tribal governments across the Pacific Northwest. ATNI advances Tribal sovereignty and self‑determination by providing a formal forum for collaboration, advocacy, education, and technical assistance. Mission To advance Tribal sovereignty and culture by providing a forum for collaboration, advocacy, education, and traditional teachings. Position Overview The Senior Project Manager oversees the planning, coordination, tracking, and completion of ATNI’s strategic projects across ATNI program areas. This position works closely with leadership, program and finance staff, ATNI Member Tribes, ATNI committee chairs, and external stakeholders, including consultants, funders, and other partners to ensure projects are appropriately resourced, compliant, and completed on time and within budget. This is an internal‑facing, project‑focused role that strengthens organizational coordination. The Senior Project Manager shall clarify roles, tasks, timelines, dependencies, budgets, risks, and next steps. The successful candidate shall develop project management tools and processes, support contract monitoring, and ensure critical and timely information flows to internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate is highly organized, detail‑oriented, mission‑driven, flexible, and proactive, with strong skills in project management, contract coordination, communication, risk management, and relationship building. Roles and Responsibilities Organizational Project Management & Coordination (40%) Lead and oversee ATNI’s high‑impact strategic projects, workplans, timelines, and operational priorities. Assign roles, dependencies, decision points, next steps, and leadership approvals needed to keep projects moving. Proactively identify project risks, barriers, capacity constraints, resource gaps, and other implementation issues requiring leadership attention or corrective action. Ensure projects are sufficiently resourced. Contract Monitoring, Compliance & Reporting (25%) Develop and maintain tracking systems for contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, subawards, and consultant agreements. Ensure timely deliverable of project deliverables, milestones, reporting deadlines, compliance requirements, budget timelines, spend‑down status, and cost allocation considerations. Manage contract amendments, and funding obligations. Work collaboratively with ATNI staff, contractors, and leadership to support successful contract and grant implementation and compliance. Monitor budgets, spending timelines, spend‑down status, budget categories, allowable costs, and programmatic use of funds in coordination with the finance team. Support internal capacity needs and identify overlapping activities, shared deliverables, cost sharing considerations, and other coordination opportunities. Support readiness for audits, monitoring, funder and contract reviews, and closeout. Systems, Process Improvement & Operations Support (20%) Develop and maintain project tracking systems, timelines, task assignments, deliverable calendars, workflow tools, and standardized project management templates and processes, while training and supporting staff in their use. Maintain project management platforms, shared workspaces, and collaboration tools. Maintain organized electronic and hard copy project files. Support onboarding and training related to organizational systems and operational processes. Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, collaboration, adaptability, and continuous improvement. Track key engagement and implementation activity. Communications & Relationship Coordination (10%) Coordinate project teams to ensure work is appropriately delegated, documented, and aligned with leadership direction. Support timely communication and coordination across ATNI teams and committees. Assist with coordination between staff, member Tribes, consultants, partners, funders, and leadership, as assigned. Help ensure timely dissemination of critical information to project stakeholders. Support collaborative problem‑solving and cross‑functional coordination. Represent ATNI professionally in meetings, convenings, and collaborative environments as assigned. Other Duties as Assigned (5%) ATNI is a growing organization. You may occasionally be asked to support ATNI activities that are outside of this position description. Position Qualifications Required Qualifications Minimum of five years of experience in project management, operations coordination, contract management, nonprofit administration, or related work. Bachelor’s degree in public administration, nonprofit management, business administration, project management, organizational leadership, Indigenous studies, natural resources, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex projects, timelines, deliverables, and competing priorities. Experience with contract and/or grant monitoring, reporting, compliance tracking, budget tracking, or deliverable management. Experience supporting budget management, spend‑down tracking, cost allocation, or financial reporting processes in collaboration with finance staff. Ability to manage sensitive information with professionalism and discretion. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Tribal governments, Tribal organizations, Indigenous communities, or Inter‑Tribal organizations. Project Management Professional (PMP), CAPM, or related project management certification or training. Experience in nonprofit, governmental, membership‑based, or grant‑funded organizations. Experience with project management and CRM platforms such as Asana, Salesforce, Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or similar systems. Supervisory, team leadership, or staff coordination experience. Familiarity with one or more ATNI program or focus areas such as Energy, Climate Resilience, Water, Natural Resources, environmental protection, and/or Tribal sovereignty. Experience facilitating advisory committees, working groups, listening sessions, or cross‑functional project teams. Work Conditions This is a regular, full‑time exempt position based at ATNI’s Portland office. Working hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends and evenings. Regular lifting of 5‑10 pounds is expected. Must maintain good attendance and regular communication and be accessible and accountable to your colleagues. Employment is dependent upon the successful completion of a background check. Travel The Project Manager will be required to attend ATNI’s conventions, which occur three times per year, as well as several additional events throughout the year. While most work is office‑based or remote, some occasional travel within ATNI’s service area (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Western Montana, Northern California, Nevada, and southeastern Alaska) may be required.
