Speech-Language Specialist

Qualifications: Valid New Jersey Educational Services Certificate and Speech-Language Specialist endorsement Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge in the field of speech-language pathology Ability to effectively apply the principles of assessment, treatment and prevention of speech, language and hearing disorders Strong interpersonal and communication skills Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education, or, during the initial six month period provide a sworn statement that there have not been any convictions of a crime or a disorderly persons offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1. Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4. Pass the State required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4. Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Job Functions and Responsibilities: In general, provide evaluative and habilitative services for students handicapped by impairments of speech. Consults with teaching staff regarding language development. Assist teachers and parents in understanding the problems presented to children with speech problems. Serve as a resource person who is helpful to the classroom teacher in locating and providing materials for use in a general speech improvement program. Organize the screening process of children within the school population to identify those requiring further diagnosis. Diagnose those children with speech difficulties selected from the initial screening tests. Select those children who require and can benefit from speech correction. Work in cooperation with Child Study Team personnel for purposes of identifying speech related learning difficulties, and the educational planning for same. Provide the necessary speech therapy and/or remediation procedures necessary for the individual students selected as part of the speech corrections' caseload.

Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times. Other Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy. Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Salary: $65,535 - $106,350 Employment Period: Ten (10) Months Union Affiliation: Belleville Education Association (BEA)
