Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. The Materials Science Department within the Space Materials Laboratory is seeking a well-qualified individual for the role of Research Associate – Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). In this hands‑on laboratory role, you will execute advanced Non‑Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques on mission‑critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components, supporting senior technical staff in technique development and validation. You will contribute to mission assurance through hands‑on inspections, data collection and analysis, and maintenance of laboratory NDI systems. This role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in state‑of‑the‑art NDI methods and materials characterization while supporting programs for USSF, NRO, and commercial space agencies. Highlights of our lab's capabilities can be seen here: Virtual Tour This position may be filled at the Research Associate II or Research Associate III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will be required to work full‑time, on‑site at our facility in El Segundo, CA. Perform non‑destructive inspections on mission‑critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components using ultrasonic testing, eddy current, acoustic microscopy, thermography, and other advanced inspection techniques Operate and maintain NDI instrumentation including ultrasonic systems, eddy current equipment, acoustic microscopes, thermography systems, and associated test and measurement electronics Collect, analyze, and document inspection data to support applied research activities in materials characterization and NDI science Contribute to mission assurance by conducting inspections, analyzing measurement data, and preparing technical reports for USSF, NRO, and commercial space programs Maintain laboratory organization, equipment calibration records, and inventory management to ensure operational readiness and compliance with quality standards Collaborate with senior technical staff and cross‑functional teams to support field evaluations, failure investigations, and technical assessments Develop proficiency in multiple NDI modalities through hands‑on training and mentorship from senior technical staff Corporate Skills You’ll Bring Strong written and oral communication skills for technical documentation and reporting Must work well in a team environment and collaborate effectively with technical staff Possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities Demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to changing project needs and priorities Detail‑oriented approach to maintaining accurate records, documentation, and laboratory standards What You Need to be Successful Minimum Requirements for Research Associate II: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university program in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (pursuing or conferred within last 12 months) 0-1 year industry experience Technical background in materials science, physics, or engineering including exposure to structural materials and the physical principles underlying non‑destructive inspection techniques Practical laboratory experience performing non‑destructive inspections using ultrasonic, eddy current, thermography or other NDI methods through academic research, laboratory coursework, or professional work Experience handling materials and specimens with proper documentation and recording of test results Ability to troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain analytical instrumentation Willingness to travel occasionally and work outside normal business hours to support program needs (approximately 10‑20% travel or as required) This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance Transcripts Minimum Requirements for Research Associate III include: Master's degree from an accredited college/university program in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (pursuing or conferred within last 12 months) Graduate‑level research or project experience demonstrating independent problem‑solving and technical depth in materials testing, instrumentation, or NDI methods How You Can Stand Out It would be impressive if you have one or more of these: NDT/NDI Level I or Level II certification in one or more methods (UT, ET, PT, MT, RT, IRT) through ASNT, employer‑based programs, or equivalent certification bodies Measurement and signal processing skills using various programming languages, i.e., Python, MATLAB, C++, LabVIEW, etc. Experience with data acquisition systems, instrumentation control, and automated testing platforms Experience with fixture design and fabrication for inspection systems, including CAD/machine drawings, 3D printing, and basic automation concepts Demonstrated use of machine learning or advanced data analysis approaches to NDI signal processing Experience with the Intelligence Community A current and active Secret or higher security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government We offer a competitive compensation package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business.
