The ideal candidate for the Emergency Dispatcher II lateral position at Stanislaus Regional 911 is an experienced public safety dispatcher who demonstrates strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should have experience handling emergency and non-emergency calls, operating a computer aided dispatch system, and coordinating public safety resources over the radio.
The ideal candidate can remain composed and focused during high-risk or rapidly changing incidents, recognize and prioritize critical information, and communicate clearly with callers, responders, and partner agencies. Candidates should be able to apply their previous dispatch experience while remaining receptive to training, feedback, and learning new procedures, technology, geography, and agency-specific practices.

Typical tasks include receiving complaints and requests for assistance at the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Dispatch Center, procuring accurate and timely information needed to classify and dispatch user agencies, classifying complaint types and entering data into the computer aided dispatch system, determining appropriate response and course of action in accordance with established policy, procedures and codes, dispatching user agency mobile unit by phone, fixed, or mobile radio communications equipment, relaying calls and information to other appropriate agencies in or out of the Stanislaus County 9-1-1 system, acting as a trainer at an assigned position, monitoring radio channel(s), and receiving and coordinating requests and responses for member agencies.
Minimum qualifications include knowledge of the techniques, procedures and methods used in the operation of a public safety communications center, the use and proper care of radio, telephone and other job-related equipment, Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations pertinent to public safety operations, the location of major streets, highways, rivers, public places and geographical landmarks within Stanislaus County, and the general functions of the Sheriff's Department, city police, fire departments and other public safety agencies. Skills/abilities include quickly and accurately following written and oral instructions, learning rules and regulations quickly and interpreting them correctly, reasoning clearly, analyzing situations rapidly and accurately in order to quickly adopt an effective course of action, dispatching public safety equipment in a coordinated manner, speaking clearly and concisely using proper English, hearing and distinguishing between several voices at the same time while acquiring and retaining the information, spelling correctly using proper English, functioning efficiently and calmly under pressure, typing accurately at a minimum speed of 35 (net) words per minute, rapidly and accurately operating complex computerized equipment, reading and understanding maps, monitoring two CRT screens simultaneously, and properly using a headset.
Education/experience required includes graduation from high school or possession of the high school level General Education Development (GED) Certificate and any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, mentioned above. An example is dispatching experience in a computer-aided public safety dispatch center. All offers of employment will be contingent upon individuals passing an extensive background investigation required by the Department of Justice because of computer access to confidential criminal information.
