About the role Under general supervision, initiates, assesses, and evaluates all forms of respiratory therapy including bronchodilators, chest physical therapy, oxygen therapy, and non‑invasive and invasive ventilator care. Exercises technical knowledge in respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology as well as the design and operations of all respiratory therapy equipment. The RCP demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. What you will do in this role: Know and understand the objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital and Respiratory Care Department. Verify and sign all new orders for respiratory care. Assure that all physician's orders coincide with current departmental policy. Recognize, interpret, and record signs and symptoms of respiratory dysfunction and medication side effects, particularly those that require notification of a physician. Initiate and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life‑support procedures. Ensure adequate airway management and assist with intubation. Prevent contamination and transfer of infection through appropriate aseptic techniques. Know the mechanics of ventilation and ventilator function. Know the principles of airway maintenance, including endotracheal and tracheotomy care. Use equipment safely and effectively for administering oxygen and other therapeutic gases, providing humidification, nebulization, and medication. Know and understand the principles of arterial blood gas analysis, acid‑base, and demonstrate competence in obtaining arterial blood gas samples. Use methods that assist in removal of secretions from the bronchial tree, such as hydration, breathing and coughing exercises, postural drainage, therapeutic percussion and vibration, and mechanical clearing of the airway through proper suctioning technique. Follow procedures and observation during and after extubating. Recognize and address psychosocial needs of patients and their families. What qualifications you will need: Experience: Prefer 1 year of experience as a therapist in an acute care facility. Education: Graduate of an AMA approved school of Respiratory Care. Special Qualifications: Must hold a full or temporary license from the State of Texas as a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner and be certified by the National Board of Respiratory Care. Demonstrated current clinical competence, as outlined in the appropriate Orientation Checklist, maintains competency on a consistent basis, as evidenced by completion of the Annual Skills Checklist, able to deal with stressful situations and able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to interact well with patients and peers. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for meeting the age‑specific needs of the patients assigned to the Respiratory Care Department.
