SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST ASSISTANT

THIS POSITION IS DUAL CERTIFICATION AND IS OPEN TO BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CANDIDATES Vacancies: 1 Hours: 7 Hours/Day (Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-3:30 PM) Months: 9.5 Eligibility Lists One list will be created from Open Competitive and Promotional candidates BASIC FUNCTION Under the supervision of a credentialed Speech-Language Specialist/Pathologist, assist in providing authorized and appropriate speech therapy services (such as developing pre-language and language skills, oral‑motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication) to identified students with speech-language disorders (e.g., articulation and phonology, language processing, hearing and alternative and augmentative communication) as prescribed by the Individual Educational Program (IEP); perform a variety of instructional activities and/or clerical duties in support of student case management services; maintain records and documentation on students; perform related duties as assigned. The Speech & Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) works with students who are eligible for speech and language services performing related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Speech & Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) works under the supervision of a certificated Speech & Language Pathologist in assisting with the development and provision of services for individual students with speech-language disorders, in a school setting. Assist in providing speech therapy services to students according to their Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and treatment plans developed by Speech-Language Pathologists. Provide direct treatment assistance to identified students under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist. Prepare therapy materials and equipment for use in the classroom including therapy activities such as picture cards, worksheets and audio equipment. Assist with the development of IEP goals and objectives for assigned students. Adapt or modify instructional materials as determined by student needs for teacher use in the classroom. Schedule activities and prepare charts, records, graphs, and data. Lift and position students into and out of orthopedic equipment and adjust equipment. Observe and control behavior and interaction of students according to approved procedures; utilize positive restraint techniques according to established procedures as necessary. Prepare learning materials and assist students in the use of alternative communication methods and a variety of computerized speech and language communication devices. Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance. Attend IEP meetings for assigned students, present findings and recommendations, as approved by a Speech-Language Pathologist. Utilize a second designated language as assigned. Provide assistance to educational staff as a case management team member through consultation, training, and individual and group activities. Assist with speech-language pathology research projects, in-service training, and family or community education. Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families. Assure the health and safety of students by following all health and safety rules. Inspect, maintain and operate augmentative communication devices and equipment. Drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work. Assist with hearing screenings under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist. Assist with conducting speech-language screenings, using appropriate prescribed techniques and devices; confer with Speech-Language Pathologists regarding student progress. Assist a speech-language pathologist during assessment, including, but not limited to, assisting with formal documentation, preparing materials, and performing clerical duties for a supervising speech and language pathologist. Perform a variety of general support duties such as maintaining records, files and preparing reports related to assigned students. Document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives by preparing charts, records, graphs, or other means of documentation and report information to appropriate personnel. OTHER DUTIES May utilize Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques according to established procedures as necessary. Attend a variety of meetings, workshops and in-service trainings to maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education AA degree in Speech and Language Pathology Assistance (accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and approved by Board) Experience At least six (6) months of Field Experience OR 100 hours formal college-level internship experience relevant to Speech and Language Pathology Prior experience working with elementary age children/secondary desirable LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Valid First-Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificates may be required by the first day of work and must be maintained during employment. Some positions in this class may require a valid Class C California driver's license and good driving record (printout from DMV) and auto liability insurance Some positions may require a designated second language. SCREENING PROCESS The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list. EXAMINATION PROCESS 3 - The examination plan will consist of: a. Written Exam (40% of final score) - September 30, 2026 b. EXAM PROTESTS Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service. ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change. SELECTION PROCESS Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times. OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Bassett Unified School District Personnel Commission office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a drug test, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from the Personnel Commission. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Personnel Commission office before the employee's first day of work. Approval will be based on the following criteria: a. Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class. b. Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class. c.
