Position Purpose

The Landfill Laborer performs routine and semi-skilled work associated with the collection and processing of recyclable materials, operation of vehicles and equipment, grounds maintenance, litter control, and general landfill operations.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

• Drives City vehicles to collect, transport, and unload recyclable materials
• Operates forklifts, uni-loaders, balers, and other assigned vehicles and equipment
• Sorts, handles, loads, unloads, and processes recyclable materials as assigned
• Performs grounds maintenance, including mowing, weed eating, litter pickup, and related work
• Performs general manual labor associated with landfill and recycling operations
• Assists with maintaining work areas, equipment, and landfill property in a clean and orderly condition
• Employees possessing the required Commercial Driver's License may occasionally operate CDL-required vehicles, primarily on landfill property and for limited local travel
• Performs related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Training and Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Experience performing manual labor, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, recycling, sanitation, or similar work preferred

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver's license
• Ability to successfully complete required background and drug screenings
• Possession of an appropriate Commercial Driver's License required when assigned to operate CDL-required vehicles

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of the safe operation of trucks, forklifts, loaders, balers, mowing equipment, and other assigned equipment
• Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment in confined work areas and around other employees, vehicles, and equipment
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to perform routine manual labor for extended periods
• Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and follow established safety procedures
• Ability to perform basic equipment inspections and identify obvious maintenance or operating problems
• Ability to work independently on routine assignments and as part of a crew
• Ability to communicate effectively and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors at the landfill and recycling facilities in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other seasonal conditions. Duties may involve exposure to dust, dirt, mud, odors, noise, moving vehicles and equipment, insects, sharp objects, and discarded or recyclable materials. Work is performed around trucks, loaders, forklifts, balers, mowing equipment, and other machinery. Employees are required to use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow established safety procedures. Work may occasionally require travel within the City while operating assigned vehicles.
