Description of Work Administrate and supervise education branch and staff at the NCMM at Beaufort. Supervise educational branch staff in curatorial level technical work in secondary/teaching collections, taxonomic identification, exhibit implementation, publication writing and proofing, in developing and implementing programming and special events that are part of educational branch responsibilities. key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Supervising staff Developing, presenting, and evaluating educational programming Oversight of programming and outreach Managing budgets and long-range planning Serves on leadership team 30% - Administrates and supervises education branch staff at Beaufort responsible for daily public and school programming both in museum and for outreach, special events, education program supervision, branch publications, proofing museum publications. Determines short term and long-range planning and daily work flow, staff assignments, budgeting, training, work standards and performance reviews. Recommends budget, personnel, space allocations, dismissal, promotion, reassignment and salary adjustments of education staff. 30% - Designs and supervises execution of programs for the general public and school groups, teacher and professional workshops, relating to maritime history, culture, and relevant marine science. Determines focus, content, staffing, organization, needs, and justification for education branch events and programs. 15% - Writes job descriptions, interviews branch curators, instructors and assistants, supervises and evaluates branch staff for all educational programs. Decides design, extent, content, scheduling, staff, budget, facility use, and evaluation methods and responses for all educational branch programs. 10% - Provides expertise in the fields of museum education for the purpose of programming or exhibit development to museum staff, volunteers, and other qualified individuals and organizations. 5% - Supervises the uses of teaching collections for the purpose of research and education. 5% - Supervises production of education program reports, articles and publications. Decides educational publications/materials to be published. Approves or suggests revisions for copy for all educational materials. 5% - Supervises education program volunteer training, and recommends annual award winners. Master’s degree in biology, education, history, museum studies, zoology, or a curriculum related to area of expertise from an appropriately accredited institution, and six years of experience in assigned specialty area, two of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Section/Unit Description The Maritime Museums Group of the Division of State History Museums is dedicated to the preservation, advancement, and presentation of maritime history, shipwrecks, and related natural history of coastal North Carolina. The group’s interpretive region stretches from the Virginia border through Brunswick County including all contiguous sound and ocean waters in coastal counties. These museums preserve, research, exhibit and interpret their collections for the benefit of the general public and diverse audiences in order to: inspire appreciation; encourage discovery; promote an active, responsible understanding for the maritime history and heritage of the coastal region in a local, regional, national and international context; and encourage visitors to reflect on their own lives and place in history. The group includes the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum located in Hatteras, the Maritime Museum in Beaufort, and the Maritime Museum at Southport. The purpose of the education branch of the NCMM at Beaufort is to interpret the maritime history and related natural history through public and special group programming, exhibits and publications; to curate teaching/secondary collections; and to provide taxonomic identification for coastal natural history specimens. Through collections and historical Interpretation, its museums encourage citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations.
