Patent Agent – High Tech or Mechanical Engineering
Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent to join a highly regarded Am Law 100 law firm and its sophisticated Intellectual Property – Patent Prosecution practice in Boston, Massachusetts . The ideal candidate will have a technical background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field and an interest in working with innovative technologies and developing strategic patent portfolios.
Patent agents will work closely with attorneys, technical professionals, and clients to understand complex technologies, develop prosecution strategies, and secure patent protection in the U.S. and internationally.
ResponsibilitiesAnalyze scientific literature, patents, and patent application documents involving mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and related technologies.
Evaluate and interpret scientific data and technical concepts related to inventions.
Conduct comprehensive searches of scientific articles, patents, and patent applications relevant to inventions.
Perform detailed analyses comparing inventions with existing technologies and prior art.
Identify the essential elements, features, and components of inventions.
Draft patent applications, including technical descriptions, backgrounds, and claims clearly defining the invention.
Draft responses to patent application rejections issued by the USPTO and international patent offices.
Analyze cited prior art and develop persuasive technical and legal arguments in response to patent office rejections.
Conduct freedom-to-operate and patent clearance studies to evaluate potential risks associated with competitors' patents.
Work directly with clients on innovative and cutting-edge technologies to develop and protect intellectual property portfolios.
Present technical analysis, reasoning, and recommendations clearly and concisely to attorneys, colleagues, and clients.
Collaborate with attorneys, patent agents, and technical advisors throughout the patent prosecution process.
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field .
Strong ability to understand and communicate complex scientific and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities and manage multiple matters effectively.
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a team-oriented environment.
Patent prosecution experience is a plus.
Collaboration is an important component of the firm's culture. Attorneys and professionals are expected to work from the office approximately 60% of the time , in accordance with the firm's current workplace guidelines.
LocationBoston, Massachusetts
Washington, D.C. is also a preferred office location.
CompensationSalary Range: $120,000–$220,000 annually, plus bonus eligibility.
