Senior Software Engineer, AI for the Planet

Company Overview We are a small engineering team at the Allen Institute for AI working on AI for the Planet, focusing on maritime conservation, food security, disaster resilience, and climate solutions. We collaborate closely with a ML research team and our Product & Partnerships teams to build products that support environmental and high‑impact users. Products Skylight – AI to detect illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in real time. Governments, enforcement agencies and conservation organisations in 95+ countries rely on it to protect marine ecosystems. It lets users create custom fine‑tuned models to detect and classify novel geospatial features, using imagery from Sentinel‑1, Sentinel‑2 and Landsat. Comfortable improving processes, collaborating with researchers, and driving products from conception to deployment. Curiosity and adaptability are key. Required Qualifications 5+ years of professional software engineering experience in industry. Generalist experience across the stack and product lifecycle, including web applications, data pipelines, distributed systems and modern cloud tooling. Experience using modern AI tooling (e.g. Claude Code, agentic workflows) to accelerate development. Track record of taking software products end‑to‑end: shaping requirements, designing architecture, shipping to external users and iterating based on feedback. Ownership of production systems, including on‑call rotations, troubleshooting and metrics‑driven improvement. Clear technical communication, prioritisation and stakeholder guidance. Preferred Qualifications Experience at small or growth‑stage companies with end‑to‑end ownership. Hands‑on integration of machine‑learning models into production systems, including deployment, monitoring and scaling real‑time inference. Strong opinions about engineering practices and code quality, yet open to other perspectives. Demonstrated technical depth and self‑directed learning (e.g. open‑source contributions, technical writing, conference talks, side projects). Willingness to travel internationally to meet users. Projects We’re Excited About Automated model development on OlmoEarth – building an infrastructure that runs jobs across thousands of GPUs and terabytes of satellite imagery. Deploying a multi‑tenant agent orchestration platform for Skylight’s next‑generation AI products, providing isolated sandbox environments per user.
