Summer Lab Aide: Memory & Scribble Research (Mice)

Job Description - Summer Project Aide - Laboratory (2601628) Summer Project Aide - Laboratory Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): High School Diploma/G.E.D. (foreign equivalent or higher). PreferredQualifications: Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Biology or Biochemistry. One (1) year experience in actual lab work in a research lab. Experience performing behavioral assays in mice. Experience performing genetic cloning of proteins into mammalian and viral expression vectors and their expression in cell-lines. Experience with working with Tissue culture. Experience with working with a team of senior researchers. Experience with standard data quantification tools and statistical analyses. Brief Description of Duties: The project examines the molecular and cellular mechanisms for a critical aspect of memory management, Active Forgetting. Forgetting is thought to be mediated by the downregulation of the expression of AMPA receptors, critical receptors at the synapse that mediate synaptic plasticity, and thereby the ability of our brain to learn, remember, and importantly, forget unused or unwanted memories. The project will focus on a protein, called Scribble, and its role in AMPA receptor downregulation at the synapse, and ultimately, the mediation of memory forgetting, focusing on the molecular underpinnings of this process and determining the role of Scribble therein.

• E) 50% - Perform behavioral assays in mice studying the role of the protein Scribble in memory forgetting.
• E) 20% - Perform biochemical studies to examine the protein interactors of Scribble related to the endocytic pathway.
• E) 10% - perform genetic cloning of various proteins associated with Scribble.
• E) 10% - Analyze data and prepare figures.
• NE) 5% - Perform routine lab chores, as assigned, including disposal of rodent cages, and removing biohazard waste.
• NE) 5% - Other duties as assigned.
