Business Compliance Investigator Job Number: 417122 Department: Business Affairs & Consumer Protection Division: Business Compliance Enforcement Division Number of Positions: 7 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $75,336 Under general supervision, independently performs a full range of investigative duties to enforce and ensure compliance with the City’s ordinances governing businesses and consumer protection. Essential Duties Conducts investigations and inspections to ensure compliance with consumer protection, public vehicles, truck weight limits, and business requirements; responds to consumer complaints of deceptive practices such as alternative pricing systems, posted pricing guides, product safety, reselling of goods, tobacco sales to minors, pre‑license, cigarette tax, public way use permits, licenses, fraud, and operating conditions. Conducts certification inspections on measuring devices and heavy capacity scales, operating a small crane to lift 1,000 lb. weights onto scales, ensuring accuracy of calibration, and removes expired certification seals while affixing new ones. Inspects gas stations to ensure they are operating with current and appropriate licenses and comply with Filling Stations Rules and Regulations, including correct price posting, visible signage, and receipt issuance. Conducts undercover investigations. Confiscates illegal merchandise and issues citations, closure orders, notices, suspensions, and other enforcement actions against businesses or public vehicle operators. Prepares extensive written reports detailing findings of business compliance investigations. Informs owners, managers, or employees of regulatory standards, existing violations, and relevant ordinances and rules. Testifies at court proceedings regarding violations. Conducts research, examines records, interprets ordinances, rules and state statutes, and gathers related information to make independent determinations of compliance. Conducts truck weight investigations to determine compliance with weight limit regulations. Assists in training newly hired investigators, as required. Maneuvers scales (approximately 50 pounds) under vehicles to calculate weight (only applicable to certain individuals in unit). Additional duties may be required for this position. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, or a directly related field, plus one (1) year of work experience in investigations, research and report writing, code enforcement, and/or regulatory compliance. Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are acceptable: 60 hours of college credit in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, or a directly related field, plus one (1) year of work experience in investigations, research and report writing, code enforcement, and/or regulatory compliance. Three (3) years of work experience in investigations, research and report writing, code enforcement, and/or regulatory compliance. Licensure, Certification or Other Qualifications A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required. Must have permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability. Selection Requirements Applicants must complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test. Bid applicants possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement. Non‑bidder candidates with the best qualifications may also be selected. Location and Work Schedule Location: 2350 W Odgen Days: Wednesday – Sunday Hours: 6:00 pm – 2:00 am OR 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm
