911 Call Taker

Job Overview This is highly responsible administrative and technical work taking all emergency and non‑emergency calls that come into the 9‑1‑1 communication center by phone to determine the situation, obtain pertinent information, and relay essential information to 911 Communications Operators and other agencies and maintain logs and records of communications activities. Work is performed under the direction of the Communications Supervisor and is reviewed through the observation of performance. Responsibilities Receives 911 emergency calls for fire, emergency medical and law enforcement response. Directs calls to the appropriate response agency in accordance with department policy and procedures. Provides emergency assistance to callers via telephone including instructions for pre‑hospital emergency care, fires and other related emergencies. Operates computer aided dispatch equipment. Performs routine clerical and record keeping work. Maintains various records and prepares reports. Regular reliable full‑time attendance as scheduled. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year experience in a public safety communications environment. Must successfully pass a fingerprint background check through the Bay County Sheriff’s Office in compliance with CJIS Security Policy 5.7, section 5.12.1. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Licenses and Certifications Valid Florida driver license with an acceptable driving record. Florida Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) certification. Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification. Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) certification. Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD) certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) or approved CPR certification. Must complete required continuing education hours per recertification cycle to keep the certifications current. Failure to obtain and maintain certifications would result in separation of employment. Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of dispatch techniques and procedures used in a public safety environment. Knowledge of department rules, regulations and procedures used in dispatching of public safety personnel. Knowledge of technology used in a public safety dispatch environment. Project management and organizational skills. Skill in operating communication and computer equipment. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal communication with the public. Accurate typing 25 WPM. Comprehend and carry out oral and written instructions. Speak clearly and distinctly. React quickly and calmly in emergencies. Maintain neat and accurate records and logs. Read maps and learn geography and road systems of Bay County. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions. Withstand working 12‑hour rotating shifts. Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions Work is primarily performed indoors but requires some exposure to environmental changes such as outdoor weather, field conditions, and irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust. This is primarily office work requiring limited physical effort. The position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movements, repetitive motions. Frequent lifting of 10 to 15 pounds; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, and may require lifting up to 50 pounds.
