Security Systems Specialist

Salary: $60,000 - $85,000 (Depending on Qualifications) Job Summary: The University of Wisconsin‑Madison Police Department is hiring a Security Systems Specialist. The role provides technical administration, maintenance, and support for campus access control and video security systems. The specialist works across two operational areas—Access Control Technologies and Video/Camera Technologies—serving as a primary and backup resource. The position requires strong technical expertise, effective communication, collaboration, and the ability to work independently to support the institution’s safety and security objectives. Key Job Responsibilities Identify and recommend alternative technology solutions to stakeholders to meet user needs. Design, install, troubleshoot, and service complex electronic control systems and locks to meet customer specifications. Respond to service requests through various communication mediums. Analyze and interpret complex hardware, door schedules, and lock patterns and update information based on user requests and needs. Distribute security devices, track inventory, and update associated records. Work special events or assignments as designated by the Department. Required Qualifications Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to problem‑solve technical issues. General computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines. Strong problem‑solving skills. Good interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work flexible hours to be on call and staff special events as needed. A valid driver’s license with a minimum of 2 years driving experience and meeting UW Risk Management standards. Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including employment verification, reference checks, social media screening, credit check, drug screening, and medical and psychological examination. Preferred Qualifications Experience working on multiple levels of access control or security camera systems and resolving hardware or software issues. Experience administering a security camera system and/or access control system. Experience troubleshooting hardware and/or software issues. Knowledge of video management systems, access control systems, network infrastructure, low‑voltage wiring and cabling, and use of artificial intelligence systems in security. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and/or technical manuals. Strong documentation and reporting skills. Education High‑school diploma required. Compensation Salary: $60,000 - $85,000 (Depending on Qualifications).
