Job Summary

School of nursing graduates who are board eligible may work under the direct supervision of an RN. Once competent, they are allowed to provide direct and indirect patient care that they have mastered through orientation to the unit and as outlined in the UMMC job description. Care is delegated by the RN and performed safely and therapeutically, contributing effectively and efficiently toward the operation of the inpatient/outpatient unit until acquiring a Mississippi Board of Nursing license.

Education & Experience

• Associate’s degree or higher in Nursing or a recognized nursing diploma program.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required

• All nurse graduates employed at University Hospitals and Health System must obtain a valid nursing license within 120 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of clinical nursing care procedures and protocols.
• Verbal and written communication skills.
• Interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge and understanding of computer systems, tools, and programs.
• Ability to work in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Record vital signs, intake, outputs, pulse oximetry, and weights accurately and report changes to RN.
• Assist and prepare patients for treatment, exams, and procedures as directed by RN.
• Administer and perform baths and basic hygiene measures as directed by RN.
• Assist with collection and delivery of specimens to appropriate labs in a timely manner.
• Weigh, lift, turn, and reposition patients using good body mechanics.
• Submit proper patient charges for supplies/equipment cost-effectively and report equipment needing repair to nurse manager or charge nurse.
• Assist in serving dietary trays and feeding patients as needed.
• Provide and document care based upon patient expectations, age, and developmental level.
• Adhere to UMMC’S infection control policy.
• Attend and participate in continuing education/in-service programs.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environments such as high noise level, heat and cold, handling potentially dangerous equipment, biohazardous conditions (radiation exposure, bloodborne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals), and attention to safety considerations. Hours may be beyond the regular schedule, with occasional travel offsite. Frequent bending, lifting (more than 100 pounds), climbing, crawling, crouching/stemming, driving, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, and walking may be required
(occasional‑up to 20%, frequent‑from 21% to 50%, constant‑51% or more).
