Final Filing Date: 7/6/2026 Job Summary The State Historian II supports the Cultural Resources Program by surveying and documenting historical resources within the Diablo Range District. The role provides guidance on historic resource management, ensures compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and prepares documentation to meet state and federal regulations. Responsibilities Conduct field surveys of historical sites and structures. Provide interpretive and management recommendations for preservation. Prepare reports, maps, and compliance documents for state and federal agencies. Assist in the development of preservation plans and historic subject reviews. Maintain accurate records and databases of cultural resources. Support training and development assignments as needed. Minimum Requirements Valid California Class C driver’s license. Clearance through a background investigation. Completion of State Examination/Employment Application (STD 678) and required supporting documents. Minimum qualifications as outlined in the State Historian II classification specification. Working Conditions Combination of office and outdoor work in variable weather conditions. Regular hiking up and down steep hills with field equipment. Exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. Physical demands include lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds. Telework This position is designated as telework eligible – office centered.
