Organization Summary The LA Conservation Corps (the Corps) is a private, non‑profit organization that has been helping at‑risk young people develop themselves since 1986. More than 20,000 young people have participated in Corps classes and service projects, learning new skills while contributing to the quality of life for all of us in the greater Los Angeles area. Mission Provide at‑risk young adults and school‑aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community. Position Summary The Crew Supervisor implements the mission of the LA Conservation Corps by using leadership, supervisory and technical skills to develop the educational and work skills of young people, enabling them to advance their education, personal and career opportunities. The Crew Supervisor supervises, coordinates work projects, recruits, provides educational support, and fulfills other leadership responsibilities for a team of 5‑12 program participants aged 18‑24. The Crew Supervisor offers the closest personal contact with Corps members in the work environment, motivating them to create stronger ties to their communities and develop leadership skills. Essential Functions Motivate young people to fulfill their education, development and work plans and goals. Provide Corps members with the skills necessary to improve employability. Supervise the crew in the completion of service projects such as tree planting, litter and weed abatement, recycling, graffiti removal, landscaping, trail maintenance and construction, restoration, and park construction projects. Ensure safe work practices, a safe work environment, and proper maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools. Maintain consistent high quality of work on various projects. Serve as liaison between project sponsoring agency staff and supervisor at project worksites. Train and guide the team in project development tasks. Implement work projects timely and efficiently from start to finish. Ensure appropriate equipment availability for the work crews to perform the work projects. Maintain professional ties with community‑based organizations and sponsors. Provide team support for community events and promote community involvement in team projects. Plan and carry out assigned crew scheduling. Prepare daily and monthly reports of project work assignments. Counsel, motivate, provide constructive discipline and positive reinforcement for Corps members. Complete at least ten (10) hours of staff training annually (e.g., supervision, basic computer skills, sexual harassment, chainsaw operation, defensive driving, conflict resolution, writing/grammar). Maintain punctuality and satisfactory attendance; working from home is not an option. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Qualifications – Minimum Requirements Ability to perform physical requirements of the job and train others. Ability to work with diverse populations and motivate young people to meet program goals. Ability to structure tasks, establish priorities and set goals. Demonstrated supervisory, project management and logistics skills. Demonstrated sensitivity and effective interaction with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, disability and ethnic backgrounds. Strong oral and written communication skills for preparing concise, logical, grammatically correct documents and presentations. Competent computer skills (Microsoft Office) and ability to complete necessary reports. Work schedule will vary on project needs; includes graveyard hours for night events at different venues as required. Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent required; AA and/or Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum six (6) months experience working and/or training young people of various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds or an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Chief Executive Officer. Proficiency in using tools and safety equipment appropriate for various work projects. Other Requirements Attend community events and meetings to support the program; may involve working Saturdays or Sundays as needed. California ClassC Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement and valid driving record for commercial policy insurability per California state requirements. 90 days to secure endorsement if not currently held. Standard multimedia first aid certification required; 90 days to acquire if not held. Pass a post‑offer drug/alcohol screening test at a designated facility before commencement of employment. Pass a post‑offer Live Scan (fingerprint/background clearance – Department of Justice) before commencement of employment. Reference checks will be conducted.
