Senior Commercial Underwriter

Lead the evaluation of complex commercial property and casualty risks for mid-market accounts, applying deep analytical judgment to shape portfolio profitability and protect our policyholders’ enterprises. Role Overview As Senior Commercial Underwriter, you will assess submissions across general liability, commercial property, inland marine, and umbrella lines for accounts generating $50K–$500K in annual premium. You will work closely with brokers, actuaries, and claims professionals to structure coverage that balances competitive positioning with disciplined risk selection. This position reports directly to the VP of Commercial Lines and carries individual authority up to $2M in policy limits. You will mentor junior underwriters and contribute to quarterly portfolio reviews that shape our appetite guidelines. Key Responsibilities Analyze loss runs, financial statements, and inspection reports to price commercial risks accurately Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with retail and wholesale brokers Maintain a profitable book of business with a target combined ratio below 95% Collaborate with actuarial teams on rate adequacy studies and trend analyses Mentor associate underwriters and conduct peer reviews on complex submissions Present portfolio performance summaries to senior leadership quarterly Qualifications A minimum of five years in commercial lines underwriting with demonstrated authority on mid-market accounts. CPCU designation preferred; strong candidates holding AU or AINS designations will also be considered. You must be comfortable with actuarial pricing models and possess exceptional broker relationship skills.
