Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

Summary This is an open‑continuous announcement for Assistant United States Attorneys in the Civil Division of the Middle District of Georgia with vacancies in the Macon, GA and Columbus, GA offices. The announcement will remain open until all positions are filled. Responsibilities Assist the United States Attorney in the Civil Division by representing the United States in civil litigation. Tasks include: Defensive litigation involving the Federal Torts Claims Act, the Administrative Procedures Act, Title VII, constitutional torts, habeas corpus claims in immigration matters, and other areas of the law. Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) actions to enforce federal law. Representing the United States as primary counsel in hearings, oral arguments, and trials in the United States District Court and U.S. Court of Appeals. Conducting substantial legal research, drafting pleadings, motions, and opinions at trial and appellate levels. Working independently and collaboratively with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies in a demanding environment. Qualifications Required J.D. degree (or equivalent) and active membership in any U.S. bar by the date of entry on duty. United States citizenship. Strong leadership, organizational, negotiation, research, writing, and analytical skills. Ability to volunteer assistance to other attorneys and demonstrate fair and sound judgment. Preferred Superior courtroom and communication skills. Exceptional research and writing ability. Demonstrated professionalism and interpersonal skills in a high‑demand work setting. Security & Residency Requirements Initial appointment requires a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation. Assistants United States Attorneys must reside in the district or within 25 miles of the office. Selective Service Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service System or be exempt. Salary and Benefits Pay is determined based on years of professional experience. Basic pay ranges: Columbus, GA: $81,160 to $190,431 (incl. 23.79% locality pay). Macon, GA: $76,748 to $180,078 (incl. 17.06% locality pay). Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and the Federal Employees Retirement System.
