Position Description Purpose The purpose of this job is for the development and instruction of water therapy programs for a wide range of children with complex needs. Accountability This job is accountable for evaluating student progress and participating in the development of Individual Progress Plans with teaching staff. Responsible for the recruitment, supervision and training of volunteers, new staff members and teaching substitutes regarding pool programs, requirements and procedures. Responsible for ensuring safety of students in pool and change area, and adherence to health and safety regulations and by-laws. Major responsibilities Develops recreation programs, individual programs, Water Experience, Pre-Red Cross, Hydro-Therapy and Fitness programs. In collaboration with teachers, Therapists, Classroom Assistants and parents, reviews goals and programs and determines in which program the class should participate. Instructs students in all pool therapy programs, both group and individual programs. Monitors and assesses student progress and adjusts programs accordingly. Makes recommendations to instructional staff for new and/or revised programs. Develops and/or revises programs to meet individual student and classroom needs. Ensures programs are up-to-date with respect to the student’s needs and progress. Develops long- and short-term lesson plans. Purchases, adapts and/or makes equipment to be suitable for use by students in the pool programs. Provides written evaluations on each student at completion of each program. Continuously develops new songs, games and routines to be used with students in the pool program. Trains and updates volunteers and staff accordingly. Schedules times that external agencies use the pool facilities. Keeps track of usage records. Sends out billings according to chargeback arrangements. Tests chlorine and pH at end of every day. Takes pool samples to Foothills Hospital on a weekly basis. Responsible for maintaining pool and hot tub clarity and area cleanliness. Inspects equipment for safety standards. Orders, buys, repairs, disinfects and inventories all pool equipment. Responsible for recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers. Assesses suitability of volunteers and makes assignments to appropriately match volunteers with students. Plans, instructs, evaluates and provides accreditation for students in the Water Safety Program. Other related duties as assigned. What are we looking for? Qualifications Education and Experience High school completion. Successful completion of post-secondary diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, or its equivalent. Must possess Water Safety Instructor I and II certification and First Aid Training and Aquatic Emergency Care. Minimum of two years’ experience working with children with complex needs, with at least one year of related experience working in pools. An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered. Demonstrated Skills and Competencies Describe the skills and competencies required to perform the job, including a short description of the level of mastery required to be successful (e.g., demonstrated communication skills, including the ability to negotiate and influence…) Must be prepared for physical exertion on the job (bending, lifting). Must have the ability to maintain enthusiasm and commitment with students who may make very slow progress. Ability to supervise and train volunteers. Effective communication skills. Good organizational skills. Some experience using accounting and/or tracking programs. Personal suitability.
