Elementary Custodian

Elementary School Custodian Position Summary: Perform a wide variety of custodial, building and grounds maintenance and cleaning tasks. Assume responsibility for a specific area of the building and grounds and report any required maintenance tasks to the Head Custodian. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Has sole responsibility of the building during designated times. Complete work assignments daily and assist other workers as necessary. Execute building security procedures as required. Support maintenance of safe and healthy work/play conditions throughout the campus. Observe and follow safety, health regulations and District guidelines. Maintain excellent communication with the principal or immediate supervisor. Establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with staff and students. Provide assistance to community groups as needed. Operate heating equipment as instructed by superiors. Typical Duties Cleaning: Clean all assigned classrooms, vacuum, dust, mop, spot‑mop, empty and clean wastebaskets, clean chalkboards/whiteboards, trays and erasers, dust all horizontal surfaces, vents and univents, clean walls and around doors and light switches, dust lockers, beams, etc. Lavatories/Locker Rooms: Clean and disinfect fixtures, floors and partitions daily, check and replenish supplies, clean shower rooms, clean lockers. Gymnasium and Playground: Dust, mop, and remove scuff marks; clean behind bleachers, clean drinking fountains, inspect bleachers, playground equipment and play areas, complete inspection forms. Cafeteria: Empty garbage, clean lunchroom after lunch (wipe tables), set up and take down cafeteria tables, clean kitchen area. Security: Secure all outside doors and windows at designated times. Other Responsibilities Inform the Head Custodian or Night Lead of needed supplies. Monitor people entering the building for night activities; open and secure designated areas as needed. Clean and maintain outside building areas, including flowerbeds, gutters, drains, etc. Wash windows. Required Qualifications Minimum 6 months of custodial experience. Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis. Criminal background clearance. Current Grade IV boiler license for gas‑fired or oil‑fired boiler, if applicable. Excellent safety record. Knowledge of school board policies, procedures, electric heating system operation, and basic computer, phone, and e‑mail skills. Ability to perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently, pay strict attention to detail, maintain good attendance, follow District procedures, communicate effectively, practice safety and security, build positive customer relations, work collaboratively, uphold ethical standards, and work with cultural competence. Preferred Qualifications None specified. Condition of Employment Criminal background clearance. Grade IV boiler license (if required). Excellent safety record. Knowledge of School board policies and procedures. Operation and maintenance of electric heating system. Basic computer, phone, and e‑mail skills. Ability to Organize and perform job responsibilities independently. Maintain punctual attendance and report absences. Follow written or verbal instructions. Physical Demands The job requires physical stamina and includes sitting, lifting, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, working at heights, walking, grasping, holding, cleaning, unlocking, opening, pushing, pulling, hearing, speaking, writing, and keyboarding. The employee will lift at least 35 lbs. regularly and at least 50 lbs. occasionally. Work Environment Employees operate dangerous mechanical systems, are exposed to noise, hazardous chemicals, high voltage, inclement weather, and varying temperatures. Unusual hours may be required in emergencies. Work Schedule Typical swing shift, Monday through Friday, 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Reporting Relationship Reports to the Building Principal or Designee. Representation International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) – Local 286. Level of Compensation Range 2 on the International Union of Operating Engineers Salary Schedule.
