Medical Assistant - Per Diem

About The Role

The Medical Assistant - Per Diem will provide high-quality clinical and administrative support within the Medical Assistant department on an as-needed basis. In this hourly, per diem role, you will work collaboratively with providers, nurses, and other team members to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care. This position is ideal for a highly flexible, detail-oriented professional with consistent weekday and weekend availability, a willingness to commute between multiple clinic locations, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while adapting to varying schedules and supporting different clinical areas as needed.

What You'll Do

• Assist providers with patient care, including preparing patients for examination, obtaining vital signs, documenting medical history, and updating electronic health records (EHR).
• Perform basic clinical procedures such as rooming patients, administering injections, conducting point-of-care tests, collecting specimens, and performing EKGs in accordance with clinical protocols and scope of practice.
• Support front-office functions as needed, including patient check-in and check-out, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance information, and handling patient phone calls.
• Maintain exam rooms, clinical equipment, and supplies to ensure a clean, safe, and well-stocked environment that meets infection control and safety standards.
• Accurately document all patient interactions, procedures, and treatments in the EHR, following organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and confidentiality standards (HIPAA).
• Provide patient instructions and education as directed by providers, reinforcing care plans, medication instructions, and follow-up requirements in clear, understandable terms.
• Coordinate patient flow to optimize clinic efficiency, communicating effectively with team members to minimize wait times and support a positive patient experience.
• Follow established protocols for handling medications, vaccines, and sharps, including proper storage, administration within scope, documentation, and disposal.
• Participate in quality and safety initiatives, such as infection prevention, patient identification verification, and incident reporting, to support continuous improvement.
• Demonstrate flexibility by working variable shifts and locations as needed, including coverage for staff absences, peak clinic times, and special clinics.
• Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and professional standards, maintaining a high level of professionalism, reliability, and respect for patients and colleagues.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent clinical training required.
• Current Medical Assistant certification/registration (e.g., CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA) preferred or required based on state and organizational guidelines.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited provider (e.g., AHA or Red Cross).
• Previous experience as a Medical Assistant in an outpatient or clinic setting strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic computer applications (email, scheduling, data entry).
• Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written, with the ability to provide clear instructions and document accurately.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple tasks, and maintain attention to detail.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach, including empathy, professionalism, and respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work variable, per diem hours, including potential early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends based on department needs.
• Knowledge of standard clinical procedures, infection control practices, and basic medical terminology.
• Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods, and to lift or position patients and equipment as required for routine clinical tasks.
