I&C Design Engineer Lead

Our client , an advanced energy technology organization developing next-generation power generation systems, is looking for an I&C Design Engineer Lead . This role provides technical leadership for the design, integration, and delivery of complex instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems supporting advanced industrial technologies. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary engineering efforts from system requirements through final design while collaborating with suppliers, engineering partners, and cross-functional teams.

Location: United States (Remote)
Duration: 12 months
Compensation: $69 - $115 per hour.
Additional Compensation: This position is not eligible for bonus or incentive compensation.

Summary:
The I&C Design Engineer Lead will lead the design, integration, and technical execution of instrumentation and controls systems for advanced engineering programs. This position is responsible for developing system requirements, coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities, supporting supplier oversight, and ensuring designs comply with applicable industry codes, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in industrial control systems, strong technical leadership skills, and experience delivering complex I&C platforms from concept through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and integration of instrumentation and controls systems from functional requirements through final design.

• Develop and review system requirements, engineering design specifications, interface control documents, system design descriptions, and other technical documentation.

• Create and manage engineering design packages, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control system architecture drawings, control logic diagrams, loop diagrams, and instrument installation drawings.

• Specify instrumentation, measurement technologies, and control system architectures for complex industrial applications.

• Perform engineering evaluations to ensure compliance with applicable industry codes, engineering standards, licensing requirements, and quality assurance programs.

• Coordinate I&C system integration with mechanical, electrical, process, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

• Provide technical oversight of supplier engineering activities, including review of engineering deliverables and coordination with procurement teams.

• Support engineering change management by evaluating design modifications and their impact on interfacing systems.

• Assist with project planning, scheduling, and execution to ensure engineering deliverables meet project objectives.

• Support licensing activities and preparation of technical documentation associated with regulatory reviews and safety analyses.

• Promote engineering best practices and identify opportunities to improve design quality, efficiency, and project execution.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; advanced degree may substitute for years of experience.

• Minimum of 10 years of direct experience with instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems.

• Experience with instrumentation and controls development, diagnostics, and designing and delivering industrial I&C platforms.

• Familiarity with implementing design control and development in accordance with nuclear quality assurance requirements (e.g., 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1).

• Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and design constraints while resolving technical conflicts.

• Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.

• Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and lead engineering design teams with minimal direction.

• Ability to work effectively across multiple simultaneous multidisciplinary engineering efforts.

• High degree of integrity with the ability to communicate effectively, foster teamwork, and collaborate across engineering disciplines.

Nice to Have:

• Experience with nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation systems design.

• Familiarity with IEEE and IEC standards.

• Experience designing and operating high-temperature industrial processes (400°C and above).

• Experience developing or working with Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

• Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or SolidWorks.

• Experience with formal I&C system startup testing procedures.

• Experience leading supplier technical oversight and multidisciplinary engineering design teams.
