OVERVIEW:

Canopy Adult Program, a Division of Giant Steps Illinois, Inc., is looking for an experienced, qualified therapeutic riding instructor who can build a riding program working specifically with individuals with autism from ground zero. The Canopy Adult Program is in Sugar Grove, Illinois. The Equine Therapy Program will be conducted at the Rich Harvest Farms Stables, and the day program will be conducted at 264 S. Main Street in Sugar Grove Illinois. Rich Harvest Farms is a private golf estate in Sugar Grove that features a fully outfitted equine stable with indoor and outdoor arenas as well as miles of scenic riding trails. Qualified individuals will be extremely knowledgeable of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.),its standards and membership guidelines,and will successfully navigate the center accreditation process and possess a PATH Certification.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES TO INCLUDE:

Equine Management in Conjunction with Barn Management Assist in screening and selecting equines Recognize equine unsoundness and ailments Assist in monitoring health maintenance program Participate in nutrition program Assist in monitoring veterinary and farrier record Monitor equine first aid kit Monitor and fit tack and equipment Assist in the implementation of equine training and schooling Participate in the practice of safe horse transportation method Support the Canopy Adult Program Supervise participants and provide assistance as needed with activities of daily living, vocational training, & community outings. Supervise and engage with participants during less structured times of the school day such as opening, lunch coverage, recess, and snack times Complete professional documentation including daily communication logs to families, behavioral data collection, accident reports, physical intervention and seclusion forms, etc. Work on a few Saturdays per year for organizational equine program outreach Support the annual gala & 5K Walk Participate in team meetings, classroom meetings, program-specific meetings, all-school meetings, and professional development activities Develop Instructional Team Assist in the recruitment and training of equine volunteers Monitor volunteer sign-in to ensure they are logging hours in appropriate categories to show training in said areas Locate and involve community resources Formulate instructional team duties Integrate support professionals Provide initial and ongoing team training Conduct ongoing team evaluations Organize Instructional Program in Conjunction with the Canopy Adult Program Process student applications to ensure they are complete Determine student placement and identify any contraindications Participate in multi-disciplinary team Prioritize student equine and global goals and objectives Collaborate with the Curriculum Coordinator & direct supervisor to design equine interactive vocational lesson plans Match student with horse and equipment Develop procedural accountability Implement Instructional Program Set up instructional environment Conduct initial student assessment and risk assessment Orient student Determine individual mounting and dismounting procedures Conduct mounted evaluation Monitor safety procedures Document of student progress Provide feedback to multi-disciplinary team Promote the human-animal bond Select and Maintain Instructional Equipment Determine student equipment needs Determine equine equipment needs Determine instructional materials Select and design adaptive equipment Evaluate donated equipment for use and safety Educate team in use and care of equipment Oversee Operating Center Facility in Conjunction with Barn Management Assess physical facility Identify and properly designate restricted areas Assess and maintain operating center accessibility Provide safe, professional instructional environment Provide safe mounting area and equipment Ensure on-site telephone access and emergency call instructions Conduct ongoing physical facility evaluations Interaction with Operating Center Administration Follow company policies and procedures Understand operating center instructional structure Participate in planning the equine program Assist with the budgeting process Make recommendations on student population Monitor compliance with federal, state and local regulations Participate in operating center fund-raising Assist with publicity and public relations Participate in PATH accreditation process Participate in development of emergency procedures Professional Education/Continuing Education Support human and animal ethical practices Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification Participate in ongoing self-evaluation Expand working knowledge of Autism and disabilities Expand equine proficiencies Participate in continuing education Review current literature Maintain professional relationships Pursue instructor certification Network with national, regional, state and local groups Review and follow current PATH Intl. Monday through Friday 8 AM to 3 PM Working from Rich Harvest Farms Stables and the Canopy Adult Program in Sugar Grove, IL

CLASSIFICATION

The PATH Certified Instructor is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

SALARY

Starting salary is $40,000.00/year Salary is commensurate with level of education and experience.

CALENDAR

The PATH Certified Instructor follows the Canopy Adult Program calendar.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-employment physical, drug screening, and criminal background check Possesses appropriate professional credentials Passing PCM training is a requirement of this position. Participation in PCM training and adherence to the Professional Crisis Management Association’s guidelines require at least average physical fitness. Any physical limitations or conditions that may impact one’s ability to participate in PCM training or PCM must be made known to Giant Steps upon application, as performance of various physical tasks is a bona fide occupational requirement of this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Work is typically performed indoors within the school facility Moderate physical movement is required for the job Moderate exposure to physical risk is anticipated The noise level in this work environment varies from quiet to very loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continually required to stand, walk, sit, run, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, balance, crouch, talk, hear, smell, and smell, and see. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds.

ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REVIEW

An annual performance review will be conducted each spring by the SUPERVISOR. The PATH Certified Instructor will complete a self-assessment of his/her performance and submit the self-assessment to the SUPERVISOR two weeks prior to his/her annual review each spring.
