Department of Environmental Protection, Northwest District This position is located in Pensacola, FL. **Internal Agency Only** Position Overview and Responsibilities: This is second level intermediate environmental professional work performing scientific tasks independently under limited supervision within the Compliance Assurance Program. The job requires skills in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions and a general understanding of scientific principles.
Facility Compliance.
- In general, this position will conduct a wide variety of inspections including facilities known to be mid to highly complex and investigate and take action to resolve complaints.
- Plans and conducts inspections, site visits and other required field work. Reviews permitting files, reports and other documents applicable to the inspection. Makes calculations and technical evaluations to determine compliance status of regulated facilities.
- Provides compliance assistance to regulated facilities before, during and after inspections. Conducts follow-up visits as needed to assist facilities with returning to compliance without enforcement.
- When necessary, recommends enforcement action. Drafts enforcement documents including documents for mid to highly complex cases. Coordinates and leads enforcement meetings.
- Conducts specialized district peer reviews of inspection documents and reports and serves as a technical advisor in one or more program areas.
- Reviews permit applications and draft permits as necessary to ensure the final permit meets State regulatory requirements.
- Provides technical assistance as needed internally and externally. Internal assistance includes training of ESIs and ESIIs. Provides technical assistance to permitting engineers and management personnel as requested. External assistance includes conceiving, supporting and participating in compliance assistance workshops for the regulated community.
- Participates, develops and leads cross-training activities. This includes, but is not limited to, safety events, job shadowing, on the job training and team building initiatives as directed by management.
- Is a self-advocate for training and partners with appropriate district staff to learn about multiple DEP program areas.
- Produces timely and accurate documentation of inspections, site visits and field work.
- Enters inspection documentation, compliance data and resolution actions into the designated database.
- Processes reports in accordance with established program rules, requirements and policies.
- Reviews required reports, test reports, protocols and notices for regulated facilities. Ensures the reviews are accurate, completed timely and are entered into the designated database.
- Provides database and report processing training for staff.
- Ability to serve the public, DEP's stakeholders and each other in a courteous and timely manner.

- Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable State and Federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs.
- Skill in collecting, evaluating, analyzing and interpreting scientific or technical data.
- Ability to conduct field inspections/investigations that may involve working outdoors for extended periods of time in temperatures and weather conditions typical of Florida and navigating areas with rough terrain.
- Knowledge of field sampling techniques for soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment.
- Ability to train, motivate and inspire others to achieve team goals.
- Valid Driver License
- Ability to travel, including some overnight.
- At least 6 years of verifiable related experience in Environmental/Regulatory and or Engineering. Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in Natural Science, Environmental Science or Engineering may be used as an alternative for the required 6 years of experience on a year-for-year basis. A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.
- Pursuant to the sections 110.1127 and 435.04, Florida Statutes, and DEP Directive 422, Background Investigation, is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.

We proudly serve 16 counties in the Florida panhandle including Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington. This district has three offices located in Pensacola, Panama City and Tallahassee. This position is available in Pensacola located downtown at 160 W. Government St. Pensacola, FL., 32502.
