PRN/Pool Athletic Trainer
The PRN/Pool Athletic Trainer provides supplemental athletic training and sports medicine services for athletic competitions; tournaments; practices; physical examination events; community programs; and other assigned activities. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide game and event coverage based on departmental; school; college; and community-partner needs. Under the direction of a licensed physician and in accordance with applicable laws; professional standards; physician directives; Hendrick Health policies; and established protocols; the Athletic Trainer provides injury and illness prevention; clinical evaluation; immediate and emergency care; treatment; rehabilitation; reconditioning; and appropriate referral. This position may also provide general athletic training; clinical; administrative; educational; or community-outreach support based on departmental needs and the employee's qualifications; demonstrated competency; licensure; and professional scope of practice.
Essential Functions
Athletic Event and Game Coverage
- Provides athletic training coverage for assigned games; competitions; tournaments; practices; camps; community events; and other athletic activities.
- Arrives at the assigned venue with sufficient time to assess the environment; prepare medical supplies and emergency equipment; and coordinate with event personnel.
- Provides pre-event services; including taping; wrapping; bracing; injury assessment; preventive measures; and preparation of athletes for participation.
- Recognizes; evaluates; and manages athletic injuries and illnesses occurring during assigned coverage.
- Determines whether an athlete may safely continue participation; requires activity restriction; should be referred for additional medical evaluation; or requires emergency care.
- Provides immediate and emergency care and activates emergency medical services when appropriate.
- Follows applicable emergency action plans and coordinates emergency response with coaches; administrators; physicians; emergency medical services; and other event personnel.
- Provides post-event assessment; treatment; follow-up instructions; referral recommendations; and communication regarding participation status as appropriate.
- Maintains appropriate communication with the department regarding significant injuries; emergency incidents; referrals; and follow-up needs.
General Athletic Training Duties
- Provides athletic training services under physician direction and within the employee's education; training; competency; licensure; and assigned scope of responsibility.
- Provides injury and illness prevention services; including taping; wrapping; bracing; environmental monitoring; hydration guidance; protective-equipment recommendations; and athlete education.
- Performs evaluations of musculoskeletal injuries and other medical conditions commonly encountered in athletic settings.
- Provides therapeutic interventions; rehabilitation; and reconditioning services when assigned and within the Athletic Trainer's scope of practice.
- Monitors an individual's response to treatment and communicates changes in condition to the appropriate healthcare provider.
- Assists with return-to-participation activities in collaboration with physicians; advanced practice providers; rehabilitation professionals; athletes; families; coaches; and authorized school personnel.
- Facilitates appropriate referral to physicians; advanced practice providers; rehabilitation services; imaging; emergency care; or other healthcare resources.
- Maintains complete; accurate; timely; and confidential documentation of evaluations; treatments; referrals; participation restrictions; emergency incidents; and other required information.
- Communicates medical information and participation recommendations only to authorized individuals and in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.
- Inspects playing environments; athletic training areas; emergency equipment; protective equipment; and treatment supplies for potential safety concerns.
- Maintains assigned medical supplies; emergency equipment; and treatment materials in a clean; organized; secure; and operational condition.
- Assists with pre-participation physical examination events; injury-screening clinics; educational programs; health fairs; sports medicine initiatives; and community-outreach activities.
- May provide supplemental athletic training coverage at schools; colleges; clinics; community partner locations; or other Hendrick Health-supported events.
- May assist with orthopedic or sports medicine clinic operations within demonstrated competency and under appropriate provider or departmental direction.
- Collects and reports assigned information related to event coverage; athletic encounters; injuries; treatments; referrals; and outreach activities.
- Maintains required licensure; certifications; continuing education; competencies; and training.
- Demonstrates professionalism and represents Hendrick Health positively in interactions with athletes; patients; families; coaches; administrators; healthcare professionals; community partners; and the public.
- Performs other related duties as assigned that are consistent with the employee's qualifications; competency; licensure; and professional scope of practice.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Degree must meet applicable requirements for licensure as an Athletic Trainer.
Minimum Experience
- No previous professional work experience required.
- Prior athletic training experience in a secondary school; college; university; physician practice; hospital; sports medicine; or community-event setting is preferred.
- Previous experience providing independent game; tournament; or event coverage is preferred.
Required Licenses and Certifications
- Current license as an Athletic Trainer issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
- Current Basic Life Support certification at the healthcare-provider or professional-rescuer level.
- Valid driver's license and driving record that meets Hendrick Health requirements.
- Current Board of Certification credential preferred.
