Overview Police Officer – FULL-TIME Starting annual salary: $50,974 (Uncertified) - $62,549 (Certified). Open until filled. FLSA: Non-Exempt. BARGAINING: AFSCME Local 601. General Purpose A police officer is responsible for the efficient performance of required duties conforming to the rules, regulations, and general orders contained herein. Duties shall consist of, but are not limited to, general police responsibilities necessary to the safety and good order of the community. A police officer shall: Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventive patrol and other measures Aid people who are in danger of physical harm Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic Identify potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems Promote and preserve the peace Provide emergency services Will work weekends, holidays, unscheduled overtime and night shift The police officer position is non-supervisory. Police officer duties are performed on an assigned shift under the general guidance of the Police Chief or Sergeant. Essential Duties Exercises authority consistent with obligations imposed by the oath of office. Accountable to superior officer. Promptly obeys legitimate orders Coordinates efforts with other department members to ensure continuity of purpose and achievement of police objectives Communicates information obtained in the field to superiors and fellow officers relevant to police objectives Responds punctually to all assignments Records information concerning events since the last tour of duty Maintains weapons and equipment in a functional, presentable condition and records activity as prescribed Assists citizens requesting assistance or information; explains jurisdiction limitations and suggests other procedures when necessary Is accountable for securing, receiving, and transporting all evidence and property in custody Answers questions from the public, counsels, juveniles and adults when necessary and refers to appropriate agencies for further assistance Preserves the peace at public gatherings and resolves neighborhood disputes Serves or delivers warrants, subpoenas, and other official papers as directed; confers with prosecutors and testifies in court Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies Specific Duties and Responsibilities Patrols an assigned area for crime prevention and law enforcement For patrol includes familiarity with the route, residents, businesses, roads, and emergency services; report conditions contributing to crime Apprehends law violators or persons wanted by police Completes detailed reports on crimes, vehicle crashes, and other incidents Submits arrest reports and related crime reports; completes investigation reports as needed Preserves crime scenes until arrival of appropriate personnel Checks public assemblies and building security; observes and interviews suspicious persons Issues traffic citations; reports hazards and conditions endangering public safety Responds to public emergencies and conducts thorough investigations to aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders Remains on assigned patrol during the tour unless a police emergency requires absence Directs traffic flow and ensures the safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles Enforces local ordinances and vehicle laws; reports safety conditions to supervisors Wears appropriate traffic-safety clothing and equipment; maintains patrol vehicle and equipment Non-Essential Duties The duties listed above are illustrative; omissions do not exclude similar or related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of resources available to the department, particularly related to juveniles Knowledge of police investigative techniques and identification methods General knowledge of rules of evidence and search and seizure Ability to deal effectively with juveniles and adults Ability to question and interview skillfully Ability to organize and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports Skill in the use of firearms and police equipment Physical ability and endurance Ability to establish effective working relationships with juveniles, parents, school officials, colleagues, and the public Education and Experience High school degree or equivalent Certified completion of New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Two (2) years of patrol experience; ability to pass City drug testing No felony convictions or convictions for a crime of moral turpitude Equipment Used Equipment includes, but is not limited to: computers, fax machines, copiers, Sleuth computer program, Microsoft Office, cameras, digital recorders, tape recorders, firearms, handcuffs, expandable baton, OC spray, radio, and police vehicle with emergency equipment. Physical Demands Must be able to frequently lift and move heavy objects or persons. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to sit, stand, talk, hear, use hands and fingers; may need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, run, and subdue subjects. Shift work may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Work Environment Work is performed inside and outside in all weather conditions.
