Summary of Job Duties:
A Pharmacist I works under minimal supervision to assess, prepare, dispense and assist in coordinating all day-to-day dispensing functions of the pharmacy in a timely and accurate manner. The pharmacist will use their knowledge, skills and clinical judgment through reviewing orders to ensure safe and effective medication therapy. They will evaluate appropriateness of dose, route and formulation, allergies, medication interactions, monitoring, etc. The pharmacist will have frequent communication with other healthcare professionals as a drug information resource and provide educational information to ensure great patient care. They will report adverse drug events and medication safety events. They will document interventions in the medical record. The pharmacist will work as a team member to efficiently and accurately perform day-to-day work along with any additional tasks or projects to help achieve departmental goals. A pharmacist I will assist with technician and student supervision/direction as it relates to day-to-day dispensing functions, tasks and job duties to provide timely and efficient patient services. They will assist with prioritizing day-to-day workflow based on immediate need and a rapidly changing workload.
A Pharmacist II operates independently to manage pharmacy dispensing functions, ensuring accurate medication therapy and safety. They oversee workflow, supervise technicians, and provide educational support to healthcare teams. Additionally, they lead process improvement initiatives, offer training to new staff, and may serve as a liaison between pharmacy services and specific practice areas.
Qualifications:
Pharmacist I
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in pharmacy plus 1 year of experience working as a pharmacist (or pharmacy intern) in a retail or hospital setting.
- Licensed Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas or eligible for licensure by the State of Arkansas.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a Pharm.D.
- 2 years of applicable pharmacy experience
Pharmacist II
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in pharmacy plus 3 years of experience working as a pharmacist in a retail or hospital setting, or PGY-1 residency
- Certification as a licensed Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas or eligible for licensure by the State of Arkansas
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with a Pharm.D.
- Advanced degree (MS, MBA, MHA, MPA, etc.) AND/OR Completion of a general or administrative ASHP-accredited residency
Responsibilities:
Pharmacist I
- Reviews and interprets prescribers' orders and detects appropriateness of therapy; prepares and dispenses medications.
- Prepares sterile admixtures using proper aseptic technique.
- Prepares chemotherapy according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Answers questions from physicians and nurses.
- Serves as a primary or co-preceptor for College of Pharmacy rotational students; provides formal, in-depth training of students and new staff.
- Assists with development of educational materials and in-services for staff development.
- Directs, advises, and instructs staff in assigned areas in all activities pertaining to job duties and functions.
- Assists leadership in all aspects of pharmacy operations in area of assigned responsibility.
- Serves as a liaison between the pharmacy service line and the assigned practice area.
- Works well as part of a team and with all shifts.
- Displays a positive attitude that contributes to the overall morale of the inpatient pharmacy team.
- Corrects, rather than ignores, problems involving any issues within the medication use process or normal operation of the pharmacy.
- Promotes a safe working environment by adhering to UAMS patient safety plan and ensuring compliance with policies.
- Adheres to pharmacy laws, regulations, and policies.
- Ensures equipment and facilities are used, calibrated, and maintained properly (Baxa, KitCheck, Pyxis). Completes assigned cleaning duties and documents appropriately.
- Other duties as assigned.
Pharmacist II

- Serves as primary trainer for newly onboarded employees.
- Assists with development of educational materials and in-services for staff development.
- Directs, advises, and instructs staff in assigned areas in all activities pertaining to job duties and functions.
- Assists leadership in all aspects of pharmacy operations in area of assigned responsibility.
- Serves as a liaison between the pharmacy service line and the assigned practice area.
- Works well as part of a team and with all shifts.
- Displays a positive attitude that contributes to the overall morale of the inpatient pharmacy team.
- Corrects, rather than ignores, problems involving any issues within the medication use process or normal operation of the pharmacy.
