Job Title: Power Technician (Road Technician)

Job Description

The Power Technician (Road Technician) diagnoses, repairs, maintains, and commissions power generation, HVAC, and diesel-powered equipment at customer sites and company facilities. This role focuses on diesel generators, load banks, automatic transfer switches (ATS), switchgear, power distribution equipment, and related electrical systems, ensuring equipment reliability, safety, and high levels of customer satisfaction as a mobile field expert.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel generators and related power generation equipment at customer locations and company facilities.
• Commission new and existing power generation systems, including generators, ATS, switchgear, and power distribution equipment.
• Perform troubleshooting on generator controls, AC/DC electrical systems, voltage regulation, and battery charging systems.
• Conduct load bank testing and verify proper operation of power distribution and control systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation to identify and resolve equipment issues.
• Carry out mechanical repairs on diesel engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, and hydraulic systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance on generators, HVAC power systems, and diesel equipment to maximize uptime and reliability.
• Provide responsive field service, including emergency repairs and on-site support in diverse jobsite and construction environments.
• Interact directly with customers, communicate findings and repair plans clearly, and deliver customer-focused service.
• Ensure strict jobsite safety compliance, including adherence to OSHA requirements, Lockout/Tagout procedures, and NFPA standards.
• Document all service activities, including diagnostics, repairs, parts used, and maintenance performed, using mobile service software and reporting tools.
• Operate company service vehicles and equipment safely, including forklifts and other material-handling equipment as required.
• Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety protocols while working on electrical and mechanical systems.
• Plan service routes efficiently and manage time effectively to meet customer commitments and service schedules.
• Identify potential sales or service opportunities during site visits and communicate them through appropriate channels.
• Support training and mentoring of junior technicians by sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
• Travel locally to customer sites and participate in overtime work and emergency call rotations as needed.
• Lift and move equipment and components weighing 50 pounds or more in the course of regular duties.

Essential Skills

• 3–5+ years of experience in diesel, power generation, or industrial electrical maintenance.
• Strong expertise in diesel generator maintenance and repair, including engine diagnostics and fuel, cooling, and hydraulic systems.
• Proficiency in generator controls troubleshooting and diagnostics for ATS, switchgear, and power distribution systems.
• Solid knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems, voltage regulation, battery and charging systems, and control circuits.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams accurately.
• Hands-on experience with load bank testing and verification of generator performance.
• Competence using multimeters and other electrical testing equipment safely and effectively.
• Demonstrated ability to perform preventive maintenance on generators, HVAC power systems, and diesel equipment.
• Independent problem-solving skills in field service environments, including emergency response repairs.
• Strong customer-facing service skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.
• Thorough understanding of OSHA safety requirements and jobsite safety compliance.
• Knowledge and application of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and familiarity with NFPA standards.
• Safe driving and equipment operation skills, including the use of forklifts where required.
• Consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in all work environments.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to travel locally to customer sites on a regular basis.
• Ability to lift 50+ pounds safely and repeatedly.
• Willingness and ability to work overtime and participate in emergency call rotations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with generator brands such as CAT, Generac, MTU, Kohler, and similar manufacturers.
• PLC troubleshooting skills and familiarity with SCADA systems used in power generation applications.
• Previous experience in HVAC power systems and their integration with power generation equipment.
• Knowledge of solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and related telematics systems.
• Customer relationship management skills with a focus on building long-term service partnerships.
• Strong time management and route planning capabilities for efficient field service operations.
• Awareness of sales opportunities and ability to identify and communicate additional service needs.
• Experience training or mentoring junior technicians in technical and safety practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and mobile service software for documentation and reporting.
• Technical school certification in a related field (preferred).
• Associate degree in Diesel Technology, Electrical Technology, Power Generation, or a related discipline (preferred).
• Generator manufacturer certifications (preferred).
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (preferred).
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification (preferred).
• EPA certification (preferred).
• Military experience working with power generation systems (preferred).

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with work performed at customer sites and company facilities in a variety of construction and industrial environments. Technicians work on diesel generators, HVAC power systems, automatic transfer switches, switchgear, power distribution equipment, solar and battery energy storage systems, and advanced electrical controls, using tools such as multimeters, load banks, mobile service software, and telematics platforms. The position involves regular local travel in a company service vehicle, participation in overtime and emergency call rotations, and frequent hands-on work with heavy equipment and components. Safety is a core focus, with strict adherence to OSHA standards, Lockout/Tagout procedures, NFPA guidelines, and consistent use of appropriate PPE. Work conditions can include outdoor and indoor sites, new construction environments, and the operation of forklifts and other material-handling equipment, requiring technicians to maintain professional attire suitable for industrial field service work.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rochester, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
