Job Title: Phlebotomist II – Falls Church

Job Description

This Phlebotomist II position focuses on high-quality specimen collection and processing in a fast-paced clinical setting. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, and support laboratory operations by troubleshooting issues, training others, and recommending workflow improvements. The role requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, excellent patient communication, and the ability to maintain strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and patient-focused manner.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy before processing.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, ensuring proper handling and integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy before submission.
• Package specimens for transport, following established protocols to maintain specimen quality and integrity during transit.
• Store specimens at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
• Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain compliance and specimen integrity.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure the correct tests and procedures are performed.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control guidelines.
• Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and document activities as required to support laboratory operations.
• Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and records.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Answer telephone calls, provide information as appropriate, and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner.
• Contribute to workflow efficiency by identifying issues, troubleshooting problems, and making recommendations for process improvements.
• Assist with training and supporting colleagues in phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling, and workflow best practices.
• Provide courteous, responsive customer service to patients, clinical staff, and other stakeholders.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, with a minimum of 6 months’ work experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and established procedures.
• Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required by state regulations.
• Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination tasks in a laboratory or clinical setting.
• Ability to read, understand, and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure accurate test execution.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Falls Church, VA.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Falls Church,VA.
