911 Telecommunicator

Person County Government is actively recruiting for a full‑time 911 Telecommunicator to join the 911 Communications team. The role involves answering emergency calls, dispatching responders, gathering medical information, and providing real‑time updates to first responders while maintaining professional communication under high‑pressure situations. The position offers opportunities for skill development in emergency response and communication. Responsibilities Receive routine and emergency telephone calls and determine appropriate actions. Identify caller locations and dispatch law enforcement, fire, or rescue units. Operate electronic equipment to maintain contact with police, fire units, sheriff’s office and other agencies. Interview callers to gather information, provide updates, and give pre‑arrival instruction. Use terminal systems (DCI, EMD, EFD, EPD) to check driver histories, vehicle registrations, warrant checks, and criminal records. Maintain communication logs and reports that record call nature, actions taken, and timing. Monitor public/private fire and security alarm systems, activate monitors, and dispatch volunteer agencies. Make radio contact with patrol officers to ensure safety and transmit personal and departmental messages. Handle after‑hours calls for municipal utilities, county social services, mental health, and animal control. Work in the communications center during weather and other emergencies, informing response personnel and local institutions of severe weather warnings. Schedule Full‑time, 40 hours per week (2080 hours annually). Shift types include: Day Shift: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM Night Shift: 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM Shift assignment is variable and not guaranteed. Qualifications High‑school graduation with public contact and customer service experience. Preferred: Prior communications or dispatching experience. Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Must possess valid state certification as a DCI Operator, Telecommunicator, or obtain within six months of employment. Must obtain EMD, EFD, and EPD certifications, CPR certification, and FEMA/ICR Level 100–800 within probationary period. Ability to work under high‑pressure conditions and exhibit strong problem‑solving and communication skills. Pre‑Employment Screening Drug screening for all candidates; safety‑sensitive positions require random drug and alcohol testing. Background check for all candidates; credit check for certain positions. Proof of U.S. work eligibility must be provided within three days of employment.
