Supervising Senior Producer, Weekends 

WNYC

The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for a motivated and thorough Supervising Senior Producer for our highly-rated weekend magazine shows, Weekend Edition and Weekend All Things Considered. This role will oversee the shows’ sound and editorial direction, supervise producers, and professionally coordinate with hosts and engineers

The Supervising Senior Producer, Weekends pushes the boundaries of our storytelling with their creativity. The Supervising Senior Producer, Weekends eagerly integrates smart data analysis with inventive approaches to storytelling that produce distinctive show segments and elements that make the WNYC air a compelling listen, and represents and impacts all those who live in our coverage area. They also inspire their teams to find inventive ways to reach new, diverse audiences.

Supervising Senior Producers are newsroom leaders who reinforce our culture of audience centricity, professional respect and journalistic excellence. They are the conduit between upper management and individual contributors, and play an important role in our newsroom culture. The ideal candidate has experience overseeing live news coverage as well as managing – directly and indirectly – a team of journalists.

This role, which reports to the Senior Editor of Audio Strategy, will work a Wednesday through Sunday schedule, with conventional business hours on weekdays, and a 7 a.m. start time on weekends. This leader will also be required to flex their schedule as needed to account for developing news and to contribute to weekday shows and special projects as needed. 

Responsibilities: 

• Oversee the programming, production and editorial needs of WNYC’s weekend magazine shows. Set the shows’ daily rundown, delegating tasks, and prepare hosts

• Lead planning for each weekend’s coverage as well as logistics for breaking news.

• Directly manage producers and daily assignments, providing clear expectations as well as consistent feedback

• Lead weekly meetings with the weekend hosts and producers; represent weekend coverage at newsroom meetings 

• Hold all content up to the highest standards, editing for adequate sourcing, accuracy, fairness and clarity

• Collaborate with newsroom editors on assignments, ensuring our reporting is multiplatform and aligned for all our audiences

• Collaborate with the shows’ engineers throughout each live broadcast

• Reinforce standards for ethics, professionalism and excellence, regularly articulating how coverage fits into the WNYC newsroom vision of serving the needs of a diverse population, and encouraging the production of content that gives daily utility to listeners and readers.

• Model and exhibit the highest standards of professionalism at all times.

• Propose and accept one-time or ongoing assignments or special projects within the newsroom, as decided with their relevant supervisor.

• Serving on newsroom committees focused on issues such as editorial standards, style or training.

Qualifications: 

• 5+ years of professional experience producing audio news

• Sophisticated understanding of the broadcast landscape, including applicable metrics, relevant audience trends, and audience engagement techniques. Experience in using audience data to inform good journalistic decisions to drive results

• Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion competency in their teams

• Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues

• The intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal skills to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff at NYPR

• Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking 

• Ability to manage several projects concurrently

• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team and supervise content creation

• Excellent broadcast writing and editing skills

• Experience working with and managing on-air talent

• Fluency in audio editing, working in a variety of content management systems, and other broadcast and digital delivery systems

• Interest and appreciation for the medium of audio and text and how they can be used to reach separate audiences

• Experience leading breaking news coverage

• Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment

• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Additional Information: 

This is a full-time role with an annual salary $103,500.00. New York Public Radio also offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as inclusive family leave.

This role is a hybrid capacity of two days in the office; with the ability to work from home at times. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from WNYC's Lower Manhattan offices on specified days with regularity.
