This role involves assisting surgeons during procedures, providing preoperative and postoperative care, ensuring optimal patient outcomes. Overview Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital offers highly specialized surgical and medical services in an intimate environment and is known for outstanding patient care. With 64 private patient rooms, 14 operating rooms and four intensive care unit rooms, the facility was designed to provide a comforting environment that is innovative, efficient and centered on the patient experience. The Perioperative Services staff provide excellent Surgical Care by partnering with an extraordinary team of physicians and health care professionals. Role Purpose Performs an expanded perioperative role as a first assistant to surgeons during surgical procedures in the operating room. An RNFA works alongside the surgeon to provide direct patient care and collaborates with the perioperative team and other health care providers to plan care. Responsibilities Delivers intraoperative patient care as the first assistant to the surgeon(s) as a collaborative team member; pre‑operatively performs a focused nursing assessment and analyzes the data to determine nursing diagnosis. Functions as a member of the surgical team and contributes to the overall efficiency of the peri‑operative department, considering safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and cost factors in planning, delivering, and evaluating patient care. Monitors patients' responses, modifies the plan of care accordingly, administers medications as per standard nursing practice, and implements and coordinates the peri‑operative plan of care. Participates in professional development and lifelong learning, seeks out and participates in learning opportunities, evaluates practice against current professional standards, and contributes to the professional growth of peers. Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum, includes patient and family education, incorporates research findings into practice, and advocates for perioperative health safety.
