Engineering Assistant I

Position Overview Perform engineering work that includes job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and/or transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Essential Duties Prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and maintain required documentation. Apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a variety of transportation-related activities. Assist during emergencies and inclement weather. Assist in survey activities. Collect engineering data at project sites. Create detailed plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E). Participate in the Engineering Assistants Career Development Program (EACDP) which includes job rotation, training, and continuing education. Perform engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work. Execute duties in the field of transportation engineering. Prepare and check plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and designs. Prepare drawings and exhibits to support public involvement. Review construction plans prepared by consultants. Use automated roadway, structural, and hydraulic design programs and computer‑assisted design/engineering systems. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS; a higher degree is acceptable. Valid driver’s license; this position requires driving a state vehicle. Mandatory TX Engineer In Training Certificate for Engineering Assistants II and III. No work experience required for Engineering Assistant I; no supervisory experience required. Preferred Qualifications Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Competencies Knowledge: Transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals; applicable plans, specifications, and estimates preparation, review, processing, and compliance requirements; computer‑aided drafting and design systems; plan review methods, processes, and procedures; Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Skills: Application of engineering fundamentals; use of engineering workstations and technology applications; reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps; applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities; performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry; maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others. For Engineering Assistant II and III: knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance, advanced and specialized design/drafting, design review, and performing calculations for material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data, and engineering calculations; leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Exposure to hazards such as moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals. Requires wearing protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other device). Light work: ability to lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. Balancing: walking, standing, and crouching on various surfaces without falling. Close visual acuity required for work with data/figures, computer screens, and extensive reading.
