JOB SUMMARY
The Cytotechnologist oversees the technical and daily operations of the cytology service, ensuring compliance with regulatory and quality standards while working in collaboration with the pathologist. Responsible for the full cytology workflow, including processing and accessioning all specimens, performing microscopic examination of gynecologic (Pap tests) and non-gynecologic samples, and identifying cellular abnormalities. Accurately documents findings and refers abnormal or complex cases to the pathologist for final interpretation. Ensures high-quality, efficient slide review while maintaining required workload and documentation metrics. Recognizes issues requiring pathologist consultation and ensures appropriate follow-up. Supports laboratory operations through participation in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities and provides input into departmental operations and budgeting. This role functions with a high degree of autonomy across all aspects of cytology services.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Demonstrates knowledge regarding slide results in relationship to norms for neonate through the geriatric population. Demonstrates ability to perform cytotechnology testing on all specimens submitted for cytotechnology reading and review. Is able to make interpretations of cytology specimens. Demonstrates ability to order supplies and equipment required for cytotechnology duties. Demonstrates ability to review test results to ensure quality control. Establishes a system where work being done and test results are checked by supervisory staff for accuracy and timeliness to aid the physician in providing optimal patient care. Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies. Treats any patient and/or family member (who presents as surrogate decision maker and has demonstrated right to information) with respect and dignity, should they inquire about cytology readings. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, the administrative team and the Pathologists. Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, department managers, staff, the administrative team and the Pathologists. Coordinates all work efforts to ensure patient/physician needs are met and hospital policy is followed. Ensures that the physical plan and environmental conditions of the cytology work area are appropriate for the testing performed. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Maintains a good working relationship both within the pathology department and with other departments. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. Meets current documentation standards and policies. Collaborates with other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patients needs. Performs other duties, within the cytotechnologists scope of knowledge and level of licensure, as requested by the pathologists and laboratory manager.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Have graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Meet federal CLIA requirements for cytotechnologists Have at least 3 years of full-time experience as a cytotechnologist with the preceding 10 years. ASCP certification of cytology - CT (ASCP), required.
Additional Skills
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Basic computer knowledge. Proficiency in use of cytology equipment and testing.
Specific demands not listed: Possible exposure to blood and or body fluids / infectious disease / hazardous waste requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals / specimens and Latex products. Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening is required.
