Summary:
Under general supervision, provides mammographic imaging and invasive procedures for diagnostic and treatment planning. The Mammography Technologist must meet all applicable ARRT qualifications and MQSA personnel requirements.

Responsibilities:

ALL LEVELS

Familiarity with Mammography principles, practices and concepts.

Performs and completes routine and diagnostic Mammography examinations according to Department procedures.

Verifies patient information, explains the process, and familiarize patients with the protocols and needed equipment to successfully complete the exams.

Effectively interacts with Physicians and other medical personnel for patient's continuum of care.

Minimizes radiation to patient and staff by utilizing As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) radiation concept.

Selects appropriate Department protocols and equipment set up to effectively perform the exams (e.g. Diagnostic, Screenings, Laterality, Digital and 3D Tomosynthesis).

Familiar with the equipment functions and Mammography units, compression mechanisms and other equipment control.

Notify Manufacturer of any issues, establish repairs and follow ups as needed.

Reviews diagnostic quality images for proper identification of concern, and accurate follow up examinations.

Monitors and tracks stock of imaging supplies and ensures reorder.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL II

Acts as mentor for Mammography Technologist I

Demonstrates strong knowledge with breast tissue abnormalities and presenting them for diagnosis and reviewing images with Radiologists.

Demonstrates extensive knowledge with American College of Radiography protocols with positioning and requirements for accreditation and re-accreditations.

Demonstrates understanding with the Licensing Regulations from three governing Regulatory Departments (MQSA, ACR, NRC).

Effectively performs Mammographic imaging, biopsies and other related breast imaging procedures independently.

Demonstrates technical knowledge with the upgrades in mammography modality to include applications of tomography and digital images to different imaging protocols.

Analyze the Departments need and orders the accurate needles, wire, and other pertinent procedural equipment and supplies.

Takes additional tasks assigned by the Mammography Supervisor.

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL III

Functions as the first line interface during the absence of the Supervisor.

Acts as mentor for Mammography Technologist I and II.

Comprehensive mammographic knowledge with screening and different breast diagnostic protocols.

Extensive mammography knowledge and skills in different Invasive breast procedure to include but not limited to Breast Needle Biopsies and Breast Wire localizations.

Performs scheduling for any additional views, and diagnostics, and any biopsy recommended follow ups during the absence of the Supervisor.

Assist Supervisor with Regulatory Departments in accreditations, certifications, and re-certifications.

Assist with the improvements and other processes in the department.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.

Knowledge of Mammographic technologist principals, practices and concepts.

Knowledge of Mammographic protocols, techniques, and requirements.

Knowledge of reference standards and regulatory requirements for radiography safety.

Knowledge of emergency procedures, sterile practices, infection control, basic life support, and other applicable nursing practices.

Skill in operating Digital Mammography technology and resolving problems with imaging equipment.

Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and demands.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with patients and the mammography team and other department employees.

Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

An Associate's Degree in radiography and has passed advanced Mammography registry or related field. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL I

Non-supervisory - One (1) year of mammography experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL II

Non-supervisory - Three (3) year of mammography experience.

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL III

Non-supervisory - Five (5) year of mammography experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

ALL LEVELS

Current Basic Life Support card required.

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL I

Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) and hold advanced registry in Mammography (M) within six (6) months from date of hire.

MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST LEVEL II & III

Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) and hold advanced registry in Mammography (M).
